August 2010 OAMM Menu

cooking-link1

Have you missed me this summer? Honestly, I have missed you but I haven’t! How is that for a neutral answer?

Homemade Pop Tarts

I have definitely enjoyed the break from writing out and creating the menus each month. The lack of deadlines has been down right enjoyable! I have, however, really worked on things around here to make improvements. It was nice to step back and try to figure out what was working for me and what wasn’t. And to get ahead a little bit on upcoming menus. I am a planner and having a menu plan in place for the fall just FEELS good.

I think that it will have a great impact on consistency too. I have hired the great Vanderbilt Wife (you can hire her too) to edit my menus and assist with grocery list. I can tell already that it is having a profound effect on things being correct. She already caught some KEY mistakes I had made. I also had a OAMM friend cook the menu as a test run to catch mistakes. Make sure to go give her a HOLLA and tell her thanks.

Ham & Potato Pockets

There still may be some mistakes here and there so feel free to send me an email if you find them. BUT I would venture to say things got better over the summer.

This menu is a TRUE back-to-school menu. It should be things you will find on sale or in season this month. It will also be a great way for you to prepare meals for your family as we head back into the busy school/fall activity schedule.

And one more NEW feature – each month I am going to schedule a FACEBOOK FAN PAGE NIGHT for you to ask questions, clarify menu options/grocery list items, share stories and win prizes! So don’t miss out! This month’s OAMM FACEBOOK FAN PAGE NIGHT will take place on Thursday, August 19th at 9 pm EST. Be sure to join me and fellow OAMM’ers as we talk about the August 2010 menu.

A little confused on the French Dip–are we saving “the dip” in the bag with the meat and the reheating it at serving time?

    • tricia says:

Well, we aren’t really doing the “dip” part. You could portion the cooked juices in smaller bags for that if you would like. Good Question.

  3. Amy says:

Please enable “make a copy.” I cook alone, so I always save a copy of the recipe card file as a Google Doc. I then edit my copy to include the quantities for half of a recipe before I print out each recipe. It makes it so much easier for me on cooking day.

Began researching OAMC in the early summer and think I may be ready to give it a shot. August’s menu looks GREAT! One question — the website mentioned spending $150 all at once may be difficult for some. Is that (approximate) $150 for the whole sha-bang or just for one partner’s portion of the bill?

  9. Stephanie says:

Hi! I’m new to your site and excited about trying my hand at once a month cooking. I have one question… You said on the questions page that there are 10-15 breakfasts, 10 lunches and 15 dinners. I only see 3 b, 4 l, and 8 d. Am I missing something?

    • tricia says:

Please scroll to the bottom of the August menu and look through some of the resource posts. Especially the ones about getting started. They explain how to get started and the amounts you will be making.

  19. Jessica says:

I love your website and am ready to give it a try. Wish me luck! Thanks for doing this!

  20. Cindy says:

Any idea on the loaf size for the Berry French Toast? I looked at the original recipe and didn’t find the info. Our store has a few sizes available.

    • Heather says:

I bought the very large size and it was too much for only making half batches of the recipes. I ended up with three pans of french toast and was only supposed to have two. It was easily solved though since I just made more egg mixture and had plenty of berries. Looks yummy, can’t wait to try it!

  21. Excellent blog! I truly love how it’s easy on my eyes and the info are well written. I am wondering how I could be notified whenever a new post has been made. I have subscribed to your rss feed which must do the trick! Have a nice day!

I just love your website, & I used a few of your recipes for my OAMC day. I made the homemade poptarts, berry baked french toast, & pizza croissants – and I posted some pictures on my website, with links back to your recipes & site. Thanks so much for the wonderful recipes!

  23. Samantha says:

I have tried the OAMC cooking several times before but felt overwhelmed and befuddled. This Saturday, my husband and I cooked all of the meals in your August Menu. We laughed and danced the whole day until we were exhausted and trying not to fall asleep putting the food away. I loved it. Thanks for the Step by step directions. They truly helped…and the extra rum from the Island Chicken. Can’t wait to try that one! THANK YOU.

  24. Dawn says:

I am new to this and I am wondering how long the recipes will last in the freezer. Obviously a month, I would assume, but can they last longer?

  25. Stephanie says:

Has anyone tried making the homemade pop tarts with homemade pie crust?

  26. Liz says:

ok, I am going to give this a try. I go grocery shopping today! $150 sounds VERY reasonable for us. We live in NYC and $150 is a normal weekly shopping trip… =(

  27. Laura says:

Have read about freezer cooking off and on for a long time and finally jumped in this month and cooked about 3/4 of the menu for our family. When you assembled the Roast Beef recipe, were you able to fit the vegetables, liquid and meat in the same gallon bag? I had no room left for the meat! My freezer is now happily full, though, and I’m excited to have baked french toast tomorrow.

  28. Aimee says:

I am trying to do this for the first time! When I click on the printable recipe cards, there is nothing there :( Not sure what is going on?? I tries different computers. I can click links to the original recipes, but I can’t get the cards, which I assume has the freezer directions for some of them? Please help this newbie!! Thanks SO much for everything!

  30. Jean says:

    Hi,
Just a quick question for shopping in prep of this big day :) (this month is going to be my first try at it!)
I am a food hoarder, meaning I purchase multiple quanities of things when they’re dirt cheap and throw it in either my freezer or pantry. My husband jokes that I could feed our block for a couple of weeks on my stockpile, I don’t see why you shouldn’t buy 15lbs of chicken breasts when its 1.69 this week, so that you don’t have to pay more when you actually need it! lol That being said, I would love to use the chicken, beef, pork chops, etc from my freezer to do the OAMC this month, but can you actually refreeze what you’ve just defrosted? THANKS!

    • tricia says:

It sounds like we are kindred spirits. I do the same thing but hate using the meats I purchased for fear I will be out and there won’t be any on sale. Silly I know, I just can’t get over it. Good news for your husband though. You CAN defrost and use those frozen meats as long as you thaw them slowly in the refrigerator before preparing and refreezing them. There are several links in the instructions documents that will walk you through that process. Great question though. And good luck with your first cooking day.

  31. Robin says:

I love what you have done! It’s wonderful to have breakfast and lunch as part of a plan. I’ve done OAMC in the past. But the plans I used were just too heavy on hamburger, cheese and boiled chicken for my familys’ taste.

Your yummy plans remind me of a fancy meal assbemly businesses like Dream Dinners or Dinners by Design. Thank you for shareing

  32. Melanie says:

Always love your site! Maybe with September there could be at least one or two menu items that utilized veggies from our gardens? Nothing’s cheaper than free, right?

  33. Nikki says:

The ads are covering up a portion or your text on my netbook. Is there a way I can make your site more readable?

  34. excellent article, but i have some trouble in understanding the final paragraph, could you please describe a little bit indepth?

  35. Wanted to say that the ham pockets were a HUGE hit at our house. Even the neighbor (my son’s friend) ate two before I could serve dinner! One question: any tips for getting the dough really thin? It was much thicker/puffier for us (which the kids loved, but I’d like less bread and more stuff inside)!
