Being the Sharpest Knife in the Block: Chicago Cutlery (TILT)
Disclosure: World Kitchen on behalf of Chicago Cutlery provide me with a Chicago Cutlery Carving Knife to review. All the opinions in this post are mine, want to know more about how I facilitate reviews, view my full disclosure policy!
According to some recent research by Chicago Cutlery it appears by virtue of my citizenship that I might not be the sharpest knife in the block. Their survey of Canadians and Americans revealed that Canadians are more likely to in fact be more knowledgeable about cooking habits and knife use.
Which leads me to the question, does this also correlate to national prison rates in these countries? I kid, I kid (but it would be interesting to know, wouldn’t it?)!
So what is it exactly that makes them more knife savvy than Americans? Well, this is how they were put to the test:
- Culinary love – Canadians use knives more often in their everyday cooking preparation. (How often do you use a knife when cooking?)
- Sharpen with care – almost equally both nations sharpen their knives for better performance. (Do you?)
- An edible affair – Canadians are marginally higher in terms of cooking being a social activity. (Is it a task or a journey for you?)
- Risky (kitchen) business - Canadians are more likely to try new recipes and tools. (What about you, do you like to experiment or stick with the old stand-bys?)
- Favored tools – Both nations say they use paring knives the most. (What is your favorite knife?)
Interesting, huh? I thought so. It really made me think more about how I cook, what tools I use and whether I am willing to think outside the box.
Honestly, knife usage baffles me most days. I have a nice set of knives and am never certain of how to use them. I know many times I should be using my “bigger” knives for tasks rather than my pairing knife but those “bigger” knives just intimidate me. Perhaps I would be more apt to pick them up and try them if I knew more about them. What about you?
And with that giant turkey coming your way do you just default to the head of household or the eldest man for the task or are you up for carving that turkey? Me? I leave that to the men. But I think that I might start practicing with my knives a little more to see if I can’t learn a thing or two.
And what about knives could you use a good carving knife? I’m not sure it will make it to you by Thanksgiving but I have a chance for you to win a Chicago Cutlery Carving Knife. Here is how you can enter to win.

I also leave knife sharpening to the hubby
I finally broke down last year and ordered a set of “good knives” from Pampered Chef. I was kicking myself for what I spent on them, but I have to say, they are, by far, the best kitchen investment I’ve ever made (well, besides good cookware, of course). I use the utility knife in my set the most.
I use a knife almost daily! If I don’t use it to prepare dinner, I still use it to cut up apples or cheese for the kids snacks.

I use my chef knife daily, and sharpen it before each session. I can’t imagine being in the kitchen without my knife and cringe when I cook in other people’s kitchens and all they use are dollar tree steak knives. I’m so scared I’m going to hurt myself using those wee knives on onions and what not. Get in there and use those big scary knives. Give yourself a week or two and use it on everything and in no time you’ll wonder how you ever lived without a good set of knives
I try to be an experimenter in the kitchen. We have a lot of food allergies in this house and I try to make lots of different things with our limited food options.

I use a knife quite a bit when cooking. I prep my own vegetables and I’m a vegetarian so there are usually a lot of them. I love a good chef’s knife. It really makes all the difference.

I use a paring knife everyday. I am Canadian and like to try out new recipes frequently and as well I like to use as many new cooking tools as possible.
For me, cooking is a journey into new recipies and fun with my grandchildren helping me. We learn a lot together.

I use a knife daily, mostly my chef’s knife. I find it does just about everything I need. In fact, I only have 3 really good knifes.
My favorite knives are a “utility” knife (medium sized) serrated and a chefs knife. I hardly use anything else. Well, maybe a paring knife once in a while.
