Cortney, Can You Pass the “Pee Bag”?

So our second Baby Food Big Day is behind us. THANK GOODNESS! Unfortunately for Tricia, I wasn’t as planned and organized, even by my standards, with this day as I was for the first one.  Now granted, on my behalf, I am a very scheduled person. As an example I like to schedule activities for the kids at the beginning of every week, I like to schedule vacations for the fam, I like to schedule how to procrastinate til the very end but still get everything done.  Scheduling every little teeny detail is not my thing, I leave that up to Tricia, usually. And if Tricia is not around or accessible I just wing it, and surprisingly enough, everything usually falls into place. So, on Monday I thought about jotting a few things down for the Big Day but never got around to it – that’s life in the Loyd house lately – things don’t get done as easily as they used to.

On Tuesday morning I get a phone call at 7:30 am from my mother-in-law (who watches the boys on Tuesdays to give me some “alone time”), which right away I knew wasn’t a good thing.  Yep, she needed to cancel because she came down with that nasty bug that is going around lately.  Which I don’t blame her, I know how hard it is to watch two boys under 2, when I am not sick let alone not feeling the greatest. Besides that, I wouldn’t want to risk the boys getting more sick than they already have been over the last few days.

Plan B – oh yeah – I don’t have a plan B.  Why don’t I have a plan B – oh yeah – I didn’t make an agenda with a plan B.  Well I guess we will just wing it.  Right! Easier said than done.

Fortunately, my mom gets off work at 3:00 ish so she was able to come pick the boys up and even better, she got out of work early so she showed up at 3:00. WE all were happy to see grandma!!  Let me tell you, it is no fun trying to cook massive amounts of messy baby food with a 7 month old AND a 2 year old trying to out scream each other because they know mommy can only hold one of them at a time (you know that “squeaky wheel” scenario).  So I had to alternate between 2 crying kids (remember the above comment of both of them being sick this week – so both of them weren’t feeling well to make things even more exciting).

For the first 3 hours we cooked as much food as possible and placed it in bags until we could puree it because the boys did finally take naps and heaven forbid I do anything to jeopardize them waking up.

At one point, I was in the other room doing something with one of the boys and Tricia yells from the Kitchen, “Cortney, have you seen the pea bag”.  Now keep in mind I didn’t have the benefit of seeing that comment in writing. So for a moment I had to think about what exactly she was asking!
“The pee bag, what?” I thought to myself.

OOHHH, the pea bag. You know the bag that the peas were in until we pureed them.  Well, after 3 hours of screaming children and the stress of it all, and the fact that I am a mature adult, I busted out laughing because, out of context, that was a pretty funny thing to ask.  As I am laughing about the pea bag, it reminded me of Emily’s (momminitup.com) story about her ordeal at Target. Which, now really got both of us laughing uncontrollably.
But after we composed ourselves and rejoiced in the beauty of my mom taking the kids, we did get down to business.  Since I didn’t exactly have a plan, we learned along the way, steps that could have made the process easier, which I will post later this week. All in all, we worked for 7 hours (3 of which were hell with the kids and we did take about a half hour break to eat).

And to top off the full day’s work, we ran out of ice cube trays and the sharpie died on us. So by this point we put the remaining bags in the refrigerator and today I bagged up the ice cube tray’s contents from yesterday and froze the remainging amounts.

What a day! Was the day and it’s stress worth it?  Of course, I can feel good about the nutritious food that I made my son yesterday and the money that I saved.  I will post actual amounts later this week.

Hope your day will run more smoothly than mine did!
