DIET Menu: Using Google Docs

For this menu we have deviated from the HALF/FULL menu format that you will find in the TRADITIONAL menu.There are several reasons we have chosen to do so:

  1. Single Serving Options – we know that MANY of you are not “families”. Therefore we wanted to experiment with a new menu format that would allow you to adjust the needed servings to your family situation, whether that be 1 or 14.
  2. Not everyone in your family may be dieting. This might allow you to make diet menu options for one person in the family that is dieting but still fix the TRADITIONAL menu for other members of the family.

Therefore, I thought it best we outline some different instructions to assist you in adapting the recipe cards and grocery list to your needs. Here are some steps that you will need to take to use Google Docs for the DIET Menu.

Adjusting Serving Amounts in Google Docs

  1. Click on the Google Spreadsheet Link to open.
  2. Once open, Log-in to Google Documents (it’s easy to register as a new user!)
  3. Choose File => Make A Copy
  4. Rename the new file.

Once you have made a copy for yourself, you can now change the amount of servings that you are interested in cooking. Simply type in the number of servings you will be wanting in the YELLOW box. The amounts on the spreadsheet will change accordingly.

Saving Google Docs

Here are steps to save the SPREADSHEET files (Grocery Lists, Recipe Cards) to your computer or personal Google Docs page:

Instructions for if you own Excel or Word on your computer:

1. Click on Google Docs Links to open each in a new window
2. File => Download As => EXCEL
3. Save in your personal folder on your computer

The file will now be accessible in Excel on your home system (just remember where you saved it).

Here are steps to save the DOCUMENTS files to your computer or personal Google Docs page:

1. Click on Google Docs Links to open each in a new window.
2. File => Download File As => Word (or Text)
2. Save in your personal folder on your computer.

If you do not have Excel (like me) and want to utilize Google Docs to create/edit files, still follow the steps above and then:

Spreadsheets

(You may want to do this if you are creating your own grocery list or making adjustments to the menu or the grocery list).

  1. Click on the Google Spreadsheet Link to open.
  2. Once open, Log-in to Google Documents (it’s easy to register as a new user!)
  3. Choose File => Make A Copy
  4. Rename the new file.

Instructions

  1. Click on the Google Spreadsheet Link to open.
  2. Once open, Log-in to Google Documents (it’s easy to register as a new user!)
  3. Choose File => Save As New Copy

Your personal files will now be available to utilize in Google Docs too!

    I came over from Our Best Bites and I thought I would give this a try. The trouble I am having with the document is that the directions are coming up as ###########

      That is very weird. You may want to try opening it in another browser or giving it a couple hours because sometimes Google Docs gets *sick*. If you are still having issues after trying that please email me using the above contact form, I am happy to help solve your problem. We want you to be able to use the docs!

        you may also want to try widening the column. A lot of times excel will return ##### when the cell is not large enough to display the full value.

        • Karen says:

          Try right clicking on the box. When the options come up, select format cells. On the first tab of the box that comes up it talks about number format. You want to select General instead of Text. See if that works :)

    • Amy says:

      I am having this trouble, too. I’ve found that the problem is solved by formatting the cell as “general” instead of “text.” You’ll have to also drag the cell down to resize, too. Not sure what happens when saving from the online file to a local file, but at least it’s pretty easy to fix! Certainly worth the trouble for such an invaluable tool!

    No Excel… Use OpenOffice it’s free just Google it.

  5. Tasha says:

    So in the spreadsheet, can I change the information in one of the recipe cards and have it automatically change the ingredients totals on the second page (the prep page)?

    • Tricia says:

      If you are asking about changing servings yes, it will adjust. If you are talking about ingredients or something more you would need to know a bit about spreadsheets and unhide cells to be able to do that. Let me know if I misunderstood the question.
