Freezable Recipe: Homemade Pop Tarts
Several months ago I had an inquiry on the Facebook group about if we had a recipe for homemade pop tarts. At the time I did not. I did, however, take note that it was a great menu idea for the future. I had found several posted recipes that caught my eye but each of them made their own dough. I am not opposed to making my own dough, but when you are making these as part of an 8 hour cooking session, simple is best. So I came up with a recipe of my own using pre-made pie crusts.
These are delicious! I think they actually taste better without the glaze but you can see for yourself. They are so very simple. If you are looking for less sugar for your kids just pick out a no sugar added preserves and don’t add the glaze. If you make your own preserves, even better! Anyway you look at it this is a recipe that your kids will love that you can control the ingredients. Enjoy.
Also, be sure to check them out on the once a month (OAMC) August Back-to School Menu!

Ingredients:
Pop Tarts:
- 1 box refrigerated pie crusts (2 per pkg)
- 1 cups Jam/Jelly (any flavor)
Glaze:
- 1.25 cup powdered sugar
- 4 Tablespoons milk
- optional sprinkles
Directions:
Using a pizza cutter trim the edges so that you have a square/rectangle to work with. Using the pizza cutter divide each rectangle into 4 squares. Place and spread 1-2 Tablespoons of jam/jelly on each square in the middle. Fold over the dough and seal edges with a fork. (With extra cut off dough, roll out and make 2 additional squares). Place on cookie sheet for baking. Bake at 450 degrees for 10-12 minutes. After baking remove for cooling and prepare glaze by mixing in milk until desired consistency. Spread on top of pop tarts and allow to cool.
Freezing Directions:
Once cool, flash freeze. When partially frozen place in gallon freezer bag for storage. To serve: Thaw or heat in microwave for 1-2 minutes or heat in oven. If adding glaze DO NOT put in toaster.

Holy cow! Just last night I was pondering what I could make ahead for a camping trip next week for breakfasts. I am all over this gem..this and my homemade apple butter and blackberry preserves.
Perfect idea! Hadn’t thought of that one.
These sound amazing! I’m just now getting started on once-a-month cooking and am always looking for new recipes. I still love to cook every night and Im able to do that, but I still want oamc recipes to keep on hand when I’m not in the mood to cook or something comes up and there’s no time to cook. I check your site everyday for new ideas, they’re all so great. Thanks for the great recipes and ideas!
Oh wow!! Those look awesome!! I can’t wait to make them!!
I am definitely making these with my girls.
Who knew? These homemade pop tarts sound really good. Thank you for sharing the recipe, Tricia!
Great job!fBowever, if my husband sees these, I’m in trouble…he’ll be asking for these more than those breakfast burritos. :)
Hmmm…I wonder if you could use the same technique to make your own Hot Pockets. Anyone tried that before?
You can and you can also use crescent roll dough. You might want to check out the Ham & Potato Pockets.
I was poking around the PAM website. They have a recipe for a PB&J version. They call them pies. You call them poptarts. What’s in a name? All I can say is they look even better with the peanut butter.

These are really easy with the “cut n seal” from Pampered Chef. I make something like this for my daughter w/ food allergies so that I have food for her when we go out to eat.
I just got out my cut and seal and will make these this weekend! I wonder if you could use pie filling too!
I’m sure you can!
Thank You very much for this recipie……………love it to pieces.
I’m glad you made some for me! They look delicious!! :)
How about using Nutella?
Sounds like a good plan to me. My husband recommended butter and cinnamon sugar as well. I am going to try that variation soon.
Hi. Never thought about once a month cooking. very interested. But how do I flash freeze the food at home?

Hi! This recipe looks great, but I have a question: What do you mean by “Flash freeze” and why can’t one just freeze these? Please explain. Thanks!
Please type “flash freeze” into the search box and you will see several posts. Thanks!
This is great!!!! I will definitely have to do this and then make a scrapbook page about it too! Thanks for sharing!
I was telling a friend about this, and she made a good suggestion. You could use a crescent roll, and I told her it would be more like a toaster strudel if you did that. Then you could get out the pie fillings and use those too…Awesome idea!! Thanks, can’t wait to try it!
Made the pop tarts tonight decided to try them with cinnamon and brown sugar mixture with butter and little bit of flour. they were Amazing tasted almost like the real thing. Didn’t even use frosing!!! Thanks for the recipe.
My husband has been begging me to make them with cinnamon and sugar. I will have to give that a try for sure! I liked them better without the frosting too!
i tried putting chocolate spread and marshmallows on them and it makes a very tasty crunchy treat.\n\nps. putting chocolate in instead of chocolate spread is tastier.
very cool, posted your link on my allrecipes page
These look great. We will be trying them in the next day or two to have ready for school. Thanks!
does anyone think this would work as a peanut butter and jelly pop tart?
or should i not be heating up the peanut butter? thanks for the advice and the post!

HEB has a “Cherry & Blueberry Fruit Spread” (their brand, by the jelly) that I bet would be awesome in these! There are whole berries & cherries in it!
I made these today for my son who LOVES poptarts. I used homemade blackberry jelly and put multi colored sprinkles on top. The kids (and DH and I) loved them!

These are good and easy and so impressive to the observer! haha We used generic strawberry and apricot jam. The apricot ones were great, but the strawberry was very sugary and overpowering. For me, I think the key is to use a more mild tasting jam or fruit preserve in order to really taste everything.

Your site is amazing, I am so glad I found you!! My 3 year old and I made the poptarts this weekend, a perfect recipe for kiddos to help out and he loves them too!! Thanks!
Yes that is a popular recipe! I am so glad he likes them. And welcome!
How long can these stay in the freezer?
3-6 months – see this post – http://onceamonthmom.com/get-started-how-long-do-meals-last/
Love this! And ya know, it’d be great to knock out a few of these every time you have *one* pie crust left from the box of two!
Yes, that is an excellent use of them!
Great idea! My mother used to use leftover pie crust and put a slice of cheese instead; sounds like it would work perfectly with this technique.
Does this recipe for icing harden well? I always have trouble with my icing staying soft.
I actually prefer them without icing these days. But yes it hardens a bit.
Yours came up much prettier than mine – we did it from scratch and had so much fun. I love that you added a topping! http://jennifischer.blogspot.com/2012/07/4th-of-july-pop-tarts-from-scratch.html
They may not be “pretty” but they look delicious and looks like you kids had fun!
GRRRR….I followed the directions to a “T” and didn’t even put in the suggested amount of filling because I was afraid it wouldn’t seal well if I did. I sealed them really well. Once in the pre-heated oven, I checked them at 7 minutes (mind you the instructions say to bake for 10-12 minutes) and I ended up with a ruined pan because all the jam had ran out of the pastries—RUINED my cookie sheet; I’ll never get the cooked on jam off of it. I thought at least the pastries would be salvagable and we could at least eat them, but every single drop of jam had come out of the parties and onto the cookie sheet on EVERY single one of them! I should have just baked pie dough because there was NO filling any any of them; all of it had run out onto the pan! I sure wouldn’t pay for this ruining of my cookie sheet now that they want to charge for these recipes!!!!!! Just slightly annoyed if you can’t tell!!!

These sound good! But I was wondering, how much did you save by doing this?
I don’t know how you feel about this sort of thing, but it looks like someone has copied your recipe over at keyingredient.com. I mean, she even used your picture!
