Fall.  There is a chill in the air and you are craving all the flavors of fall, apples, pumpkin, chili and anything else you enjoy!  It seems that once school begins, the time flies right past fall!  I have to remind myself to sit down, sip a cup of hot cider, and take in the beauty that surrounds me!

I think you will really be excited about this October menu.  There are some wonderfully simple breakfast items, including a family favorite of mine, Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins.  These are absolutely delicious.  Even the non-GF members of your family will enjoy!  There are a couple of great soups, as well as pizza, chili and chicken pot pie. I know how challenging it can be to feed a family and cater to dietary restrictions.  I think you will truly enjoy these selections!

For a detailed explanation of what is involved in creating the gluten free dairy free menu we have a post explaining it all. If you are new and not sure how to get started we have a wonderful series starting with 5 easy steps to get you on your way to once a month cooking. Good luck!

Are you a person that likes to see the menus visually? Perhaps you should check out the October 2012 Gluten Free Dairy Free Menu via Pinterest to see the yummy goodness you will be cooking up on this menu. Not sure what Pinterest is all about, check out what Once A Month Mom has to say about it.

Test Cooks

Each month we have some wonderful volunteers who “test” out the menu prior to publication. They do an amazing job of helping to eliminate confusion and mistakes. They may not catch everything but they sure do catch A LOT! If you are interested in test cook, feel free to volunteer. Here is a little bit about this month’s test cooks:

  • Laura Frost (who cooked the menu with broken AC in 100 degree temps!): I write a blog at http://aglutenfreemom.com and have been eating gluten free for over 10 years. Just recently we have gone dairy free for my 3 year old son. I love trying new foods, whether I cook them myself or try them out. I also love sharing my recipes and restaurant reviews with others.
  • Jami Palmgren: I am a wife and mother to a teen and 2 tweens. I recently left the workforce to have more time at home with my kids. I’ve been once-a-month cooking in some form or another for 15 years and can’t imagine running my kitchen any other way.

Are there going to be more links for these recipes?

    • mindy says:

Allison, Not at this time, as we are moving toward simpler recipes. If this is something you would like to see, we will certainly work to add more links in next month’s menu. If you need help with a particular recipe, please let us know.

  2. Shelly says:

Why are we not able to see the recipes for these dishes?
    • Fried Rice

    • Chili **
    • Mandarin Pork Chops **
    • Open Faced Chicken Pot Pie
    • 5 Can Soup **
    • Italian Chicken and Potatoes **

    • Shelly says:

And I am a member and I am unable to see it within my membership status either.

    • Kelly says:

Shelly, All of those recipes are in the recipe cards which you do have access to as a member. Click on the link above to go to the recipe cards and the recipes will be there.

  3. Laura says:

So now you have to be a member to even access all the recipes? I thought that membership was not required for that part?

    • Tricia says:

You can see the link to the recipes if you want to do it yourself, if you want access to the documents we create with freezer instructions you need to be a member. http://onceamonthmom.com/membership/join/

      • Laura says:

Several of these don’t appear to have the links, that’s what I’m confused about…same ones that Shelly asked about above -

        • Fried Rice
        • Chili **
        • Mandarin Pork Chops **
        • Open Faced Chicken Pot Pie
        • 5 Can Soup **
        • Italian Chicken and Potatoes **

        • Tricia says:

Some of the recipes are not posted recipes – this is unusual for us – but a slight variation from the norm. Those recipes are in the documents though – they just aren’t blog recipes. You could join for 1 month if you just wanted to get those. Sorry we will be back to full links next month.

        • Laura says:

Thanks for letting me know. I’m glad they’ll be back next month, I like to look at the actual recipe before I decide to include it in my make-ahead cooking. I didn’t realize you were offering a one month at a time membership option, either, I am really happy about that. I use a lot of the recipes you post here and there, but only occasionally do a full month and don’t want to have to pay for all the months I don’t use.

  4. Nichole Cooper says:

I only see a few recipes under each meal for each month….ie: 3 recipes under breakfast, 4 under lunch, and 8 under dinner. If I become a member will I be able to view more recipes to equal a full month’s menu?? And under some of the entries the actual recipe is not visible will that change if I become a member?

I applied to get the OAMM daily update in my inbox but was noticing a lot of the items are not GF. Is there a different place I need to sign up to get GF recipes in my inbox?

Hello there. I am new to OAMM and just signed up for a membership. I’m trying to decide which meal plan to chose for my first time. Normally I would go with the Whole Foods plan and just make adjustments for my daughter’s allergies. I was excited to see that ya’ll offered a dairy free option. However, when reviewing the recipes I noticed a lot of cheese substitute going on. Do you have any reccomendations as to what brands are good? We tried a few a year ago when my daughter was first diagnosed with dairy and tree nut allergies. They were pretty pricey and pretty ick. I also noticed that one of the recipes called for Dairy-Free, Gluty and so after two different brands we gave up, I also noticed that one recipe called for Dairy-Free and Gluten-Free Cream of Chicken Soup. I have never seen such a soup at my regular grocery store or at the health food store. I didn’t see an add on recipe either. Is it posted somewhere else? My Dad is incredibly allergic to wheat. So I’m thinking this meal plan would be great to do together with my mom. Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide.

Welcome Denise! There are some recipes that substitute cheese in the GFDF menu. If you prefer, you can omit the cheese. I have begun to purchase vegan or soy cheese and shred it myself. I find the consistency is much closer to the real thing. They are pricey, but I only shred what I’m going to use and then freeze any remaining cheese.
I am including the link from OAMM for cream of anything soup. If you need help understanding it please let me know and I would be glad to help. http://onceamonthmom.com/homemade-cream-of-something-soup/
It is a wonderful resource for any cream based soup replacement. I hope this helps!

      • DENISE M says:

Thanks so much for the link to the cream of anything soup Mindy! That will help out big time. I didn’t realize you could freeze the vegan/ soy cheeses. Which brand is your family’s favorite? And sorry about the repeated phrase up there. I was typing on the cell phone and well, that just never turns out right for a long blog comment. I should really know better by now.

        • mindy says:

I have tried several. I think it honestly depends on the recipe. For Thanksgiving I made a small dish of mac n cheese for my daughter so she could wouldn’t have to miss out. I used Daiya block cheese and just cut up chunks, melted it and mixed it in. But I don’t like the shredded Daiya. I recently tried Follow Your Heart Vegan Cheese. Again I bought the block and shredded it myself. It worked well also. I think it really depends on the recipe and just constantly trying different kinds to find what you like best.
