Grocery Substitution Alert: Borlotti Beans

I am pregnant so there is a good chance I just missed these BUT I spend over an hour in our super, duper, ultra fantastic, new Fresh Fare Kroger the other night (when I was having a little “me” time) and could not find borlotti beans (Chilaquile Casserole). I looked in several applicable aisles, to no avail. So I thought I should look up a substitute for you.

Borlotti Beans

Borlotti Beans

Turns out that they are a cranberry type bean that is commonly found in soups in Italy. If someone from Italy is reading and wants to send some to me or someone wants to send me there to pick up some for the rest of you I am all for it. Just sayin’. Until that happens, you can substitute kidney or pinto beans.

Good luck!

I had the same problem at our Kroger’s, too. I went to Wal-Mart today, though, and found them! They actually called Roman beans on the packaging, but they’re the same. I found this info on http://www.discusscooking.com:

cranberry bean = borlotti bean = saluggia = shell bean = salugia bean = crab eye bean = rosecoco bean = Roman bean = fagiolo romano Notes: These have an excellent, nutty flavor, and are commonly used in Italian soups and stews. Substitutes: fresh cranberry bean OR tongues of fire beans (very similar) OR cannellini bean OR Great Northern bean OR pinto bean OR chili bean

    Hope this helps!!

You can buy borlotti beans on line. ranchogordo.com. They are delicious beans. The first time I only bought one pound to try them. I’m hooked and ordered 5 pounds the secont time.
