Healthifying My Kitchen with the Help of Apartment Guide
Moving into a new house is hard work!
Sure, it’s not running a marathon hard. Or finding a needle in a haystack hard.
But, unless you have professional movers to pack your entire house, transport the boxes and furniture, and then have them unpack, moving is tough!
I know this firsthand because I just moved, got the utilities transferred over into our names, and am finally coming up for air from beneath a pile of boxes. Most rooms still need some work but the first room that is completely put together is – can you guess? – the kitchen!
Every Diet Once a Month Mom needs her kitchen in order!
Do you remember when I asked for recommendations on how to make our home more diet friendly? Well, thanks to your suggestions and Apartment Guides New Year New Space Blogger Challenge, my new home is well on the way to becoming the place where I can incorporate a healthy diet into our every day life.
Are you ready to see the changes I made? Me too!
In the Kitchen
During the move our slow-cooker cracked, we lost our can opener, and measuring cups. All of those items are essentials in the kitchen if you ask me! Dumping a ready made freezer meal in the slow-cooker is a must for those days you need a healthy meal ready as soon as you walk in the door. And measuring cups are a huge need if you’re watching your portion size.
I also picked up a fancy-smanshy salad spinner that I’m pumped about! I love a good salad but washing and drying lettuce is my biggest pitfall. Well, this salad spinner is super easy to use and it even folds up to half it’s size so it doesn’t take up all the cabinet space!
I’ve never had a great muffin tin or any porcelain ramekins so I thought I’d use this opportunity to give them a try.
They are perfect for making portion size muffins, casseroles, etc. and I can’t wait to give them a whirl.
Drinking water is a must for a healthy diet so I got a fun glass pitcher that will be perfect to keep lemon water or cucumber water ready to drink. Plus it will be so stylish when I finally put on my hospitality hat and invite some friends over.
I don’t know about you, but nothing ruins a diet like plain, boring food. Spices bring food to life and make those taste buds crave more, so creating this little spice drawer was just
what I needed. This organizer fits right in the drawer and makes it so easy to grab what I
need when cooking.
My dishtowels were also in some serious need of being replaced so I picked up a few new
ones and this cute little basket to hold them right by the sink. I love when style and function collide!
In the Dining Room
We’ve never had a dining room but knew we’d love it when we finally got one. We’ve had our eye on this dining table for several years and thanks to Apartment guide, we were able to style it up. Food is much more appetizing when the surroundings and ambiance are just right!
The tray on the table is a perfect compliment to the candle and other chotchkies we already owned. New place-mats were needed of course and although you can’t see it, I love how the shimmer and shine plays off the dining room table light
In the Kitchen Nook
I wasn’t sure I actually wanted a table in the kitchen nook but now I’m so glad we have it! It’s a great place to sit down for a quick bite before heading out the door for the day. Or, if you want a more intimate meal, you can add a few candles and set it for two!
The bookshelf behind the table is one of my favorite things about the new house. I used to hide my cookbooks behind the cabinets above the oven. For a height-challenged gal like me, it’s not really the best place to store recipes. Out of sight, out of mind.
But now those cookbooks are proudly displayed on the bookshelf and I can grab them to look up a recipe with ease. I even got a fantastic recipe box to start keeping my favorite diet friendly and healthy recipes.
In the Garden
As soon as Spring hits I’ll be planting several herbs and a few fruit trees. I may even give gardening a whirl….we’ll see! Fresh herbs, fruits, and veggies at my doorstep? That seems like the perfect way to keep a diet healthy!
I really want to thank Apartment Guide for giving me a few resources and motivation to make my new home even more diet friendly. (I’m sure Karina would like to thank them as well since she’s the one who won the $100 American Express Gift Card from Apartment Guide!!!)
