Homemade Onion Soup Mix
Don’t think that because your family eats whole foods that you have to pass over those recipes that call for packaged mixes and canned sauces. You can easily adapt these recipes by stocking your pantry with homemade versions. Many of the onion soup recipes I came across called for beef bullion, which is another store-bought item I try to avoid (we mostly make homemade stock in our house). But this one is simply dried onion, herbs, and spices. This mix can be used to season meat (think rubs, marinades, or added to the slow cooker), soups, and casseroles. You can even combine it with sour cream or yogurt to make that ubiquitous party dip. Here are a few OAMM recipes that call for onion soup mix, and stay tuned later today for a new one: Shepherd’s Pie gets a whole foods makeover!

AWESOME!! I found a homemade ranch dressing mix a couple months ago, and now this. I can’t wait to try my spinach dip with this recipe. Now, no more MSG!!! Woohoo! Thank you SO MUCH.
I save my old mayonnaise jars to put dry mixes in. Works great.
What is the recipe for ranch dressing mix?

Can you share the Ranch dressing mix recipe?
http://onceamonthmom.com/dairy-free-ranch-dressing/ If you are not a dairy free family, you can just use regular milk. If you are a whole foods family, and don’t like using lots of mayo, you can substitute sour cream or Greek yogurt.
wow, great recipe, and so easy! i have mostly all of these in my pantry and I will save this recipe to make soon!
Funny I came across this today, because I wandered, today, if there was a way to recreate the lipton onion soup mix and I was just getting online to do some research! Thanks!
How do you dry the minced onion?
Kathy you can find in your store in the spices aisle.
Thank you – onion soup mix was one of the last items I hadn’t found a replacement for yet.
Love this! My husband loves that sour cream onion dip for football games, and I’ve been trying to come up with a healthy version. Thank you so much for this! Can’t wait to try it!
Great! I have most of these dried, from the garden, and will make some. Thanks :)
I’d be very interested in seeing the nutrition values on this one! I’m crazy about onion soup mix, but HATE the sodium content!!!
The great thing about making your own is that you can adjust the salt to your liking. If you leave out the sugar, then it is just herbs and spices.
