Homeschooling in the Kitchen {Step2 Giveaway Winner}
When I launched the Step2 Fresh Market Kitchen giveaway I mentioned that we were using it as part of our homeschooling plans and that I would give you more details when we announced the winner. The contest has ended so it is time to reveal to share with you those plans. But first, I am sure you are really just wanting to know who the chosen winner is, so, here you go:

Now, back to homeschooling plans. A friend and I are working together and putting our curriculum together as a team. We are using Confession of a Homeschoolers’ Letter of the Week Curriculum (not an affiliate link) for a majority of our lessons and then supplementing with activities we find on Pinterest. We are also adding in food and music to the curriculum. I am clearly the food, and my friend is clearly the music end of this planning. So each week I add food suggestions to the letter we are studying and then once a month the kids come to our place and I host “Cooking School”.
So weekly, we make some sort of recipe or focus on some sort of food throughout the week. For cooking school, we do several of the following:
- identify food starting with the letter of study.
- go “grocery shopping” in the Step2 Fresh Market Kitchen for items that start with the letter of study.
- Practice recipe creation in the Step2 Fresh Market Kitchen.
- make a recipe, using measuring tools, that begins with the letter of study.
For example, our most recent letter of study was P. For our “Cooking School” day we did the following:
- Read Apples and Pumpkins.
- Went to our Step2 Fresh Market Kitchen and “bought” items we would need to make our recipes for the day.
- I laid out different types of fruits and vegetables on the kitchen table (an ear of corn, potato, peach, apple, banana, pear, pineapple) and I had them identify the ones that started with P.
- We cut (heavily supervised) each of the fruits that started with P and sampled slices of each. (They LOVED this and kept begging to cut and eat more.)
- We made Pumpkin Pancakes and Purple Cow’s.
- I color coded the ingredients with their measuring devices and simply instructed them to put in, “2 yellow spoons of sugar”. They did really well and were so excited to get to make their own recipe. I loved it because they were working on their colors too!
- We ate all of our items for lunch and talked about other words that started with P.
- We cleaned up.
There are so many things that you can do and ideas out there. Here are some more of mine from the Letter P on Pinterest. But I do love the roll playing that takes place beforehand in the Step2 Kitchen. It definitely helps prepare my child for proper behavior in the kitchen. Check out this great video on daddy teaching him about the fine art of being a salesperson:

Thank you so much. You just made 3 people tickled pink and another one will be come Christmas morning. I told my granddaughter and her hubby it could be a Santa present if they wanted. They were as thrilled as I was. Step 2 thank you so much for your wonderful donation for giveaway.

YAY! I love your idea of incorporating food into the Letter of the Week Curriculum! I’m starting it with my 4 yr old next month, and I’m going through your pinboard now adding ideas! Thanks!
I’m so glad I could help you!
I love this idea. Thanks. I can def do this with my 3 and 4 yr old. Each week will be a different letter and I can come up with games and ways to help them identify that letter.
I also like the cooking idea.
