How old am I again?

So this is my weekly update on my goal of running a 5k this summer. One word sums it up: DISCOURAGEMENT. Yes, I had another allergic reaction running outdoors this weekend, to the point that my tongue swelled slightly, my chest throbbed and joints swelled. I couldn’t even run a mile!! I persevered and ran/walk for 2.5 miles, but that pretty much did me in the rest of the weekend. After resting a few hours after my run, I noticed that more joints started to ache them normal. Usually, it’s just the joints in my legs, but Saturday, the joints in my arms and back just throbbed and ached all day to the point that I couldn’t hardly move. This continued into Sunday also.

How old am I again? I shouldn’t have these types of issues! I exercise 3 to 4 times a week, eat well (not as well as I could but watch what I eat) and I try to get enough sleep (as much as a mom of 2 can).  So discouragement really set in this weekend, because I am 31 years young not 65!

If you remember a post from awhile back about my crazy health concerns, here is a small update. The allergy meds seem to help, when I take them consistently. I hate taking meds! I really do. So I tried to ween myself off to see if the meds helped that much and sure enough they do. So, I am back on Nasonex and Allegra. But my joint pain is still pretty consistent. This weekend was the worst yet, to the point that I couldn’t hardly move and the wrists, elbows and shoulders were throbbing also, which has never happened. So after some internet research, I found some interesting info.

Sidenote: when I was nursing I had to go on a very strict diet of rice and chicken because Carter had an unknown allergy. During that time I felt the best that I have felt in a long time (since pregnant with my first son). I thought it was coincidence, until last week. I started a new diet that decreased the amount of salt, sugar and the bad carbs and increased omega 3 oils. My joints started to feel better again. I am a little hard headed so I thought it was another coincidence.

Back to the research: I found that hormonal changes can cause joint issues. Hello – 2 kids in 2 years – check. Also a diet high in bad carbs, sugar and salt and low in omega-3′s – check. Even though I watch what I eat, I am not strict and noticed when I slack a little bit, the pain gets worse. Some research suggested if you have joint related problems (arthritis etc) in your family history then the previous items can greatly effect your personal health. Lastly, food allergies may cause achy joints.

A few things were suggested to help with the joint pain: take a omega-3 supplement, go on a diet that includes fresh fruits, veggies, lean meats and whole grains (nuts especially) and exercise regularly. So that is what I am going to be strict on for the next several weeks. I love my sweets, so this is going to be pretty difficult to do, but worth it if I can somewhat take control of these annoying issues. And of course, I will be visiting my Doctor again and getting blood work done, to rule out any other reasons.

I am determined to feel better and just as determined to run my 5k!! Maybe through this all, I will get to know myself a little bit more also!

How horrible to have allergies affect being able to stay healthy! I hope your allergy meds, along with the changes you’re making in your diet, etc help loads!

I’m thinking that I need to do some dietary changes as well, and see if that helps some of my “issues”. Keep us posted!

Try taking glucosimine and condrodinte (help build up joint tissue)with msm (controls inflammation). These are naturally occurring nutrients we used to get a whole lot more of when our grandmothers cooked in the stock pot. I have chronic joint issues at only 38 but I have a a lot of arthritis in my family. Best of luck.

I have been drinking the green smoothies for about a month and a half every am for breakfast and I no longer crave all the junk food I have eaten for years. It’s not willpower, I just don’t event think of it. I think when your body gets what it needs you dont crave stuff. I have a candy drawer right next to my bed that i used to indulge in every night as soon as my 3 year old fell asleep. I don’t want to pass on my bad habits to her. But sometimes I’d lay there with her thinking can you please go to sleep, Mommy really needs chocolate, skittles, chips, gummy fish, etc…..and usually (6 nights a week)ate about 3 candy items like a snickers, a bag of skittles, and some chips. As a side benefit I have lost 15 pounds in the month and a half, no longer crave fast food either!!

  5. Wish you all the best with your goal to run the 5k this summer. That is one of the challenging fitness goals one can strive for and I wish you great success! I’ve been working out for over 26 years (bodybuilding) and swear by the cumulative health benefits of fish oils and omega 3 fatty acids. Studies have proven they have profound anti-inflammatory effects in the human body – and what an excellent way to help fight the ravages of ages with a natural anti-inflammatory. Again, best of luck with all your fitness goals!

    Cortney
I had the same problems jogging outside — did you know me then? Throat, tongue, uvula,& eyes eventually swelled grotesquely! Ask Jeremy. Prior to that I had my legs ache and swell. For me it turned out to be lawn sprays and pesticides…and CORN! Lot’s of corn fields around and all that corn mold stays in the ground for years. Also corn “something” is in all kinds of foods. Hope you find out what helps you! The good thing about all the years of mystery (Deut 29:29) and suffering is that I had to depend on the Lord; no one else understood…so He and I got very close, and He’s been my help and strength in a new way ever since…praise His holy Name!
With love & prayers for His healing touch!
