Introduction to Get Started: A Series to Start You on Your Once A Month Cooking Adventure
This month we are staring a series titled “Get Started”. We have realized through surveying readers that we our newest audience has been with us less than 3 months! Wow and WELCOME! We are so excited that you have decided to join us. We are definitely here to help you on your journey exploring once a month cooking (aka freezer cooking or oamc).
Pair all those new readers with the fact that we need to update some of our current resources and get back to the basics; that this series has come to be. You will still see recipes almost every day but each day you will also get a “Get Started” post that will hopefully help you with this new journey (or not so new journey) you are embarking on. It will also help you through exploring the website as a whole. There are so many functional features of the site that you may be unaware of.
So, here is a bit of an overview of some highlighted topics we are planning to cover throughout the month:
- How and why I once a month cook – Each of our contributing writers will be sharing their own personal take on how they use Once A Month Mom to freezer cook; hopefully, helping you to some of the ways that you can use the resources.
- How to flash freeze
- Budgeting for the big cooking day
- Basic needed and other suggested equipment (great for making those holiday wish lists)
- What freezes well, what doesn’t
- Best containers to use, how to save money on containers
- Group cooking and recipe swaps
- Cooking in a small kitchen
- Using a refrigerator freezer for cooking
- And much, much more!
Make sure you are subscribed so you don’t miss any of these great resources! We look forward to having you grow with us and we hope that you learn a ton this coming month.

Yea!!! I have been wanting to learn how to do this for over a year now. It has just seemed too overwhelming for me somehow.
I am also a Flylady (of you’ve never heard of that, you can take a look at my Flylady journey series on my blog), and this up coming month’s habit is menu planning. So, I am very happy and excited about reading the posts this month.
Thank you so much for sharing! :)
I’m a new reader and though I’m not new to Freezer Cooking, I’ve fallen out of the habit and feel like a newbie all over again! I’m excited about this new series! :)
Thanks for this – I have been following you for quite a while but have not started because a lot of these questions you plan to answer were not there
Thank you! This is just what I need.
I am excited to follow this as I am still trying to decide if freezer cooking will really save us money.
I am almost sure that it will. . .any reasons you think it won’t?
I am so excited to learn more. I shared with my readers as well since much of my blog is about living in balance despite having two children with food allergies and suffering from digestive problems and allergies myself. There is no such thing as a quick meal or fast food in our house… everything requires vigilance and preparation. Freezer cooking is the way to go!
What at great resource for those just starting.
Can’t wait to see what tips there will be for us “old timers”
Newbie here been getting your emails and making a few here and there but havent done the once a month thing yet feeling a bit overwhelmed this is a PERFECT time for this segment – totally looking forward to it!!!
I am so excited for this series! I started following OAMM back in September. Yesterday my boyfriend and I completed our first Big Cooking Day, it was a complete success! We finished all the recipes on the diet menu in 8 hours (we chopped the vegetables the night before) and had fun while doing it! We’re both recent college grads working full time and going to school part-time. With our conflicting schedules, we don’t get to eat dinner together as often as we would like. I think the freezer meals will definitely help and if if saves us some money as well that would be awesome. Thanks so much for this site!
Awesome! Thank you so much for sharing your story. We love to hear them!
Worth noting as well, for anyone reading this who might need some encouragement to give it a try, we prepared everything in a small apartment kitchen and stored all the meals in the small freezer above the fridge. I put a “2″ in the “yellow box” on the recipe cards for reference.
Looking forward to this series!! I’ve started freezer cooking, but not Once a month. Looking forward to getting more tips and tricks to help me out to try a OAMC!
I am a total newbie. I started small and just picked 5 recipes from October’s menu. I was able to find some containers at the $1 store and everything went very well. I made 2 beef recipes one night and 3 chicken recipes another night. It did not take much longer than cooking dinner usually takes and it is convenient to have extra meals in the freezer.
Great feedback. Thanks for sharing!
I have spent the evening going through the Getting Started posts you’ve done thus far.
I love the series! Please keep it up!
Thanks! We will . . .several more weeks yet to go! :)
