Johnny Marzetti with Cheesy Noodles
I can’t exactly say where the origin of this recipe came from. My mom use to make it for dinner and it made it into my “have to have” recipes pile when I moved out. I love the combination of flavors. It is an ingredient combination I would never have thought of on my own or thought I would enjoy. But we love it.
We had a fresh pepper in the Happy Box this week so I was excited that I could use up some of the ground beef I have in the freezer AND the green pepper. If you have a dairy allergy feel free to eliminate the cheddar cheese from the noodles. But if you don’t have an allergy. Totally leave it in – it makes the meal!

Ingredients:
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 medium green pepper, cut in strips
- 1 beef bouillon cube
- 2 Tablespoons water
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 16 ounces tomatoes, diced, undrained
- .5 cups onion, chopped
- .125 teaspoons garlic powder
- 2 Tablespoon low-sodium soy sauce
- 1 Tablespoon cornstarch
- 8 oz egg noodles
- 4 oz cheddar cheese, shredded
Directions:
Boil water for the egg noodles and cook as you prepare the rest of this dish. Brown the ground beef and onion. Drain the fat off. Add in the diced tomatoes, green peppers, garlic powder and bouillon cube. Simmer a few minutes. In a small bowl, mix together the water, soy sauce, sugar and corn starch. Add liquid mixture to skillet. Cook and stir for 2 minutes. Drain cooked noodles and place them in large serving bowl or pot. Mix in cheddar cheese. Serve Johnny Marzetti over the cheesy noodles.
Freezing Directions:
Follow directions accordingly until the end. Place Johnny Marzetti (beef mixture) in a gallon freezer bag and freeze. Place cheesy noodles in a separate gallon freezer bag and freeze. To serve: Thaw both bags. Reheat noodles in microwave until heated through. Reheat beef mixture on stove or in microwave until heated through. Serve Johnny Marzetti over the cheesy noodles.
Servings: 4-6

This looks delicious! I love incorporating fresh veggies into pasta dishes.
This looks great! And healthy! Thanks!
Oh my YUMMY! I can’t wait to try this! I’m all about the comfort food right now and there’s nothing more comforting to me than pasta!
I have never, ever heard of “Johnny Marzetti”! I love learning new things! Is this a regional thing or do others out there know it and I’m just deprived??
Can’t wait to try it!

My first time here and excited to make good use of Johnny Marzetti, BUT I have a question about the amount of onions (.5 cups?) and garlic powder (.125 teaspoons?) No one else questioned that so I must be missing something.Thx for your help!
.5 is 1/2 a cup and .125 is 1/8 teaspoon.

I thought Johnny Marzetti was just a name my grandmother made up. We always had what we called Johnny Marzetti, it was a macaroni pasta with a tomato sauce, ground beef, bell pepper, olives, and corn with cheddar cheese on top. Now I will have to ask my dad more about where the recipe came from. I am sure they are related somehow.
If you go to the refrigerated dressings in your local grocery you’ll find Marzetti dressings of Columbus Ohio. Same folks.
Johnny Marzetti was developed by the Marzetti family for their Columbus restaurant in the 1920′s.
I suspect every school kid in Ohio has had Johnny Marzetti at least once a week for their entire lives
“While Marzetti’s evolved into a four-star restaurant, known throughout the region, one of its dishes, a ground beef and pasta casserole named Johnny Marzetti after Joseph’s brother, became famous across the country in the 1920s and standard fare at the family dinner table and school cafeteria.”

This is very interesting info especially since I live in Ohio!

This was DELICIOUS! We had it for dinner last night and almost didn’t have enough for my lunch leftovers today!! It was just me and my husband eating it – kids were a little “scared” buy all the colors.
Yes, I have been craving this one this week also! Glad the family liked it!

Hello just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The text in your post seem to be running off the screen in Safari. I’m not sure if this is a formatting issue or something to do with web browser compatibility but I thought I’d post to let you know. Then again maybe its my own system. The design and style look great though! Hope you get the issue fixed soon. Cheers
Thanks for the heads up. I will take a look, I’ve noticed some things periodically in Firefox too.

I made this tonight, and I was pretty pleased. Our noodles were not the best–they were old and needed using up. But I liked the sauce. Thanks for posting the recipe.

I love this recipe! I’m trying it tonight with some Italian Sweet Sausage that needs using. We’ll see, I can only imagine it will still be DELICIOUS! Thanks for posting such awesome goodness.
Interested to see how it is with sausage.
Tricia- it was SUPER delicious! The sausage complimented the other flavors nicely and added a nice twist of spice. I also used a 26oz can of maters instead of the smaller can – I like the extra sauce. This recipe is definitely one of my favorites, I especially love how frugal it is. Thank you again for such a fantastic website and all your yummy recipes!
I also grew up eating this practically once every week. All of us kids loved it and my parents are both from Ohio even though they raised us in the West. My mom called it, “John Marzetta”. I’m glad to know where it evolved from!
