Keeping Up With Infant Bedding!

I decided to combine my Works for Me Wednesday and Real Clean Wednesday posts today because, frankly, this post fits into BOTH!

If there is one thing I HATE, HATE, HATE (other than cleaning in general) it is changing the baby bedding. Those darn infant bedding sheets fit so snug. And if you haven’t met me in real life you might not know that I am only a bit over five feet which makes reaching those corners nearly impossible. And isn’t it always 2 am when the baby decides she is going to poop pee spit up all over her bed sheets? So inconvenient!

The first layers down, one more fitted sheet added on top will make it complete.

So my solution is to double up! Well, actually, I do much more than that. I purchased several infant bedding sheets so that I can do this effectively. The knit ones work best as they have a bit more stretch. I start with covering the mattress in a waterproof mattress cover. On top of that I place an extra large burping pad. Next I put on a fitted sheet.  On the first fitted sheet I place another extra large burping pad and then I add another fitted sheet.

What this does, is giving me an extra layer or two. If the baby soaks through the sheets for some reason, I can just pull the top sheet and burping pad up and throw it in the clothes hamper. I still have a fresh made bed that isn’t wet! SCORE! I can then go to sleep. (That makes me VERY happy.)

In the morning, I simply wash the sheets and replace the top layer. That is, if the next layer wasn’t soaked through by morning. This method has saved me many a frustrating evening.

So what about you? Do you have any tricks for dealing with infant messes quickly and easily?

  1. I never would have thought to do this! I don’t have that many crib sheets and such, though. May have to look into that!

I’m about the same height, and I do the same thing!! I don’t have the stretchy sheets, just regular ol’ white ones…I’ll have to try some with stretch. I bet that is easier.

I know what you mean! add to that a 35-week pregnant belly and it’s even worse :o ) great ideas! I’ll have to keep this in mind for when Sofia comes in a few weeks!

Great idea! I did do a lot of that when my children were infants too. I had gotten some water proof crib pads from carter’s. They were rectangular and flat and fit the crib all the way around.

Another idea I wound up doing was for my son who somehow would leak through all his diapers. The wet would wake him up several times a night. ( this was well into him being able to sleep through the night on his own and him not needing me to feed him)
I would put on one diaper that was his size and then over that the next size up. The larger diaper caught the leak and no more soaked through pj’s and sheets! Everyone got a good night’s sleep. :)

i was just telling an expecting friend this weekend, of all the things that come w/ being a mom. changing the crib sheets is my most dreaded task! what a great idea!

I’ve been using what’s called the Ultimate Crib Sheet (used with all 3 boys) and I love it. It’s waterproof, goes on top of your nice crib sheet and snaps in place so you don’t have to move the mattress at all and it’s easy to put on and take off. here’s a link to it http://www.amazon.com/Basic-Comfort-Ultimate-Crib-Sheet/dp/B00003XAKP

Your idea is also great for an older kid who still has a bedwetting problem.

Put the following on bed in this order:

    1.Mattress pad
2.waterproof pad (or plastic sheet, big trashbag)
    3.Sheet
    4.another w/p pad
    5.another sheet
    6.layer again if you want

This allows the child to be responsible for their own situations – even during the night! And saves the parents from having to get up in the middle of the night to find – and put on – clean sheets, etc.!

It is also important that the child be expected to take the sheets to the laundry area.
Believe me (mom of 6!), they’ll feel “bigger” – which can even help them quit wetting the bed altogether!

[VERY IMPORTANT!! NEVER EVER got upset for a pottytrained - or older - child wetting the bed.]

Have fun with those kids – they grow up fast!!

ok i *love* this idea! my son just made a mess in his bed and ièm going to apply exactly the same thing tomorrow! need to go and buy some extra layers though! :)

  9. Chrystal says:

Good idea. :) I usually take the mattress out of the crib to change it!

I use and recommend clouds & stars zip on sheets. For a short gal like me, they are a life saver!!! Tip – get two ‘base’ sheets. The baby will inevitably puke down the side of the crib. Only once in 16 months, but it will happen! I have 3 top/zip sheets and 2 mattress pads. Works perfectly – and I have extras for the next kid. This is my MUST have baby item.

  11. Ive done this since my 2nd. I’m on my third right now and he’s still in the co-sleeper. I don’t do 3 layers but I DO do 2. :)

  12. i always prefer those wool and cotton baby beddings because they keep the baby warm.’.

  13. i always use baby beddings that are made of natural fibers, it really keeps them warm at night*
