Mad Hungry: Review & Giveaway
Earlier this week my husband and I were desperately seeking some “get out of the house time” with our son. We decided to head to the local Books & Company and wonder the aisles let our 14 month old run around. While there, I ran across a cookbook on display that caught my eye. Several moments later my husband approached and told me I should “attend that”. I looked up to discover that the author was making an appearance and holding a book signing.
Again, my husband encouraged me to attend. Who was I to pass up an opportunity to get out of the house on my own for a few moments? Is there any mother out there that would pass on this opportunity? I think NOT!
I went early and spent a little more time going through the cookbook. I was actually giggling outloud at some of the call outs and information in this book. So many little truths about men and eating. If you have ever cooked for a man (husband, brother, son, neighbor, friend) you will not only love the recipes in this book, but the wit and humor that go along with it.
The book? Mad Hungry: Feeding Men and Boys by Lucinda Scala Quinn. Lucinda is the Executive Food Director for Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia and, more importantly, the sister of five brothers and mother of three sons. I think she might know what she is talking about when it comes to feeding men/boys!
One of the author taglines is, “Never be caught without bacon.” How true is that? I knew from the moment of reading that line that this cookbook would be a MUST in our home. Not only that, one of the reasons I was drawn to the cookbook in the first place was its beauty. Yes, I just said its beauty. It is a work of art! There are so many great pictures and captions and tidbits of information. I have sat looking at it for hours this evening, mesmerized. And hungry.
Beyond the beauty and humor are real life recipes. What I mean by that is that they are meals that you and I, or more importantly, the men in our lives, will enjoy. And it isn’t just all meat, potatoes and bacon. There are lots of recipes for vegetables, desserts and so much more. It is a wealth of information and great recipes.
We have a couple of all-star menus coming up the next few months as I will be busy with a new little one but come the first of the year I promise to include a recipe or two from this cookbook on our menus. She has some great ones that can be made and frozen as well. Really, this is a great all-around cookbook to have at hand.
If you know someone that likes to cook, is a mother to many boys, or a grandparent to may grandsons this would make a perfect Christmas gift. Hence the reason I am telling you about it now instead of waiting until the first of the year when I include it on a menu. I don’t normally buy cookbooks (just being honest, that is what the library is for) BUT I did purchase this book. I fell in love with it and couldn’t resist splurging.
And after wards, I got to meet the author and talk with her a bit. She was incredibly kind and gracious and has agreed to provide one of you lovely readers with a copy of her new cookbook. We love cookbook giveaways!

My greatest challenge is making enough. Sometimes I make extras in hopes of having leftovers for lunch or even for dinner the next day. However, the “boys” seem to eat just enough so that the leftovers now become enough for 1 instead of 3 or 4.
I can never seem to make enough food to fill up my husband and son!
Just Facebook’d the phrase. Thanks!

For me, my seven year old’s crazy metabolism means FREQUENCY! He needs to eat so many times a day, putting away quite a bit each time. It’s astonishing really.
My biggest challenge when it comes to cooking for men is that I can double a recipe and it will still be gone the next day!! And that is just for my husband and I! I am really trying to do my research by reading this blog and a few others to gear up and try to do the once a month thing… It will definitely save a lot of time in the long run!!

My greatest challenge is making enough food…the men in my life eat a ton! Thanks for the chance to win the book:)
My greatest challenge is the big batches I have to cook. I feel like I need an industrial kitchen and right now I am only feeding my hubby and toddler. I can’t imagine what it will be like in 10 years!

I have two teenage boys and they both like different things. Between them and my husband, they eat a lot of food!! But if I misjudge amounts and cook more than enough for a day or two they get tired of it and I have to figure out what to do with the leftovers. Now that I know about OAMC maybe feeding my men will be a little easier!!
My husband seems to always be hungry. Even after a large dinner, within a half hour he is in the kitchen pouring a bowl of cereal! Where does he put it all?
My problem has been getting dinner on the table *before* they’re ravenously hungry. If I wait too long, then we all go a bit mad!
You will LOVE this cookbook then!
What is your greatest challenge when attempting to feed the men/boys in your life?
Preparing a meal that they will all like. My husband is picky so is my youngest. Thankfully my middle son likes pretty much everything that I cook!

My #1 struggle with feeding my husband is the amount of food he eats! We’ve been married for almost 6 years and I still don’t cook enough. I’m in real trouble when my infant son starts putting it away!

My greatest challenge is keeping everyone happy. The men hate veggies and anything hot n spicy. I love to eat anything.
They don’t like to eat salads or vegetables as much as girls
I have three boys + husband. My biggest challenge is trying to get them to try new foods. Two of my boys do not like rice or potatoes. (Where did they come from?) It is hard to find foods that they will all eat without it being macaroni & cheese with hot dogs!
My greatest challenge is getting the variety I crave, while feeding him the same old foods he’s comfortable with!

Biggest challenge with feeding my husband his derise to have pretty much the same thing all the time.

My greatest challenge is usually deciding what to fix. After that, it would be getting it all started in time to eat before bedtime!

You’ve been FACEBOOKED! …. with a great Christmas idea!
I have 3 sons, a brother, a step-father and a husband. The only other female around is my mother. Big pots of gumbo, chili and what I call double-roast nights help me a lot. Thankfully, only two are picky eaters. My biggest challenge seems to be finding something new to feed this bunch! I would love this cookbook! I already subscribe to this blog and I sure do appreciate your effort!

My greatest challenge is satisfying the appetites of my four guys… 1. My husband of 5 years, 2. My 14 year old son, and 3 & 4 … my stepsons who are 12 and 9… they are all very different and like different things… we seem to manage okay, but there are days where I need to cook different things to satisfy all of them and cook enough to feed all of them….
And finally, I just joined the Mad Hungry facebook page as a fan. Can you tell I really want to win this cookbook?

My problem is not exactly a problem to me but to them. When I make something, they won’t ever tell me they don’t like it. My husband went for years not liking salmon patties but he ate them anyway. He didn’t want to hurt my feelings lol!
My biggest challenge is that even thought I can make a lot of “servings” of a recipe, ie double or triple it, it will be gone way sooner than I expect!
I Facebooked the phrase.

I just became a FB Fan of “Mad Hungry”. I can’t wait to check out this book! I think my biggest challenge feeding men is trying to step out of the “meat and potatoes” box. I know they like it and I aim to please, but it’s hard to get creative!
I love your site and would love a copy of the book! Thanks for all you do.
My biggest challenge is trying to get some protein in my boys. They don’t like to eat anything but breads, veggies and fruits. Which isn’t bad but a little protein is nice. Great giveaay, thanks!
I already subscribe, thanks!
I have a hungry husband and 3 boys and feel like there is never enough food…ever! I can get groceries one day and the next they are all prowling around asking “what is there to eat?”
I fear it will only get worse as the boys get older!!
I would have to agree — it’s definitely making enough to feed my husband and two sons (and three daughters). Some days my 9 year old daughter could eat her brothers under the table!
The biggest problem for cooking for my DH is that he likes very few veggies. We really only have a handful of veggies that both of us like in common. It gets old serving green beans and corn every night, so I feel like a bad wife/mother/person when I don’t serve any veggie at all. Half the time I make a veggie and he doesn’t even attempt to try it.
My biggest challenge is getting them to eat leftovers without them knowing they are doing so!
My biggest challenge is including meat in every meal…I’d probably be fine with having meat once or twice a week, but not the boys

i have a 5 month old son and i’m trying to make him a better eater than his dad, who only eats meet:)

I am a regular follower of your blog! I have been drooling over this book since I saw it featured on Martha Stewart and the Today show. As a mom of three, who can’t use that kind of help. I would say the hardest thing about feeding men and boy is keeping them FULL!
I signed up for the Mad Hungry blog.
yeah… I cook for a college group of mostly boys, weekly, and it’s always a challenge to stay affordable, while having ENOUGH and being creative, not just meat and potatoes every week. Thanks for offering this!

My biggest challenge is coming up with different ideas that he will actually eat (very picky!) beyond chicken strips and hamburgers. Sounds like a great cookbook!

I cook for hubbie and two growing boys…. how on earth do I cook something they like AND that I like? Meat and potatoes isn’t too figure friendly and they wouldn’t be happy with just soup or salad.
Just joined the FB fan page, too.
It is a challenge for me to find something that everyone will eat that is both filling and healthy.

I have two big boys and a toddling baby girl. It’s hard to find recipes that the boys like, and that translate to something I can make for the girl two. It’s also hard to find main dish flavors that everyone agrees on. (Dessert at our house is NO problem, but we can’t live on dessert!)
I just had twin boys in January and I make all of their food for them. So far, they seem to like everything except asparagus, but I often wonder how long that will continue. My husband, on the other hand, is not so easy. My greatest challenge with him is that he rejects all vegetables unless they are raw. He will eat salad, but no vegetables can be cooked into the main dish. I love what you said about never being caught without bacon. If I put bacon in anything, it’s a hit! I have seen and heard Lucinda on TV and on the Martha Stewart Channel on Sirius XM, and she always has yummy food to suggest. This book sounds wonderful, and I would love to win it.
The greatest challenge in cooking for my husband is reading his mind! I’ll have menus all planned out for the week, and all of a sudden he has a hankering for something…or wants to go to Dairy Queen!
I already subscribe to your website and would love to win the cookbook.
what a neat book! I would love to win.

My greatest challenge with my husband is feeding him whatever his latest diet challenge is that month. He is a skinny 6’3″ man and insists on losing all his fat and won’t eat carbs, and loves meat right now. I am patiently keeping up with him, but put my foot down when he wanted to eat large quantities of meat these next 2 weeks. I don’t know about my fellow twitterers out there but isn’t there a better way to lose fat? He is terrified of developing high cholesterol like his Dad and his brother and his mom. I hope to look this book over when I can and would love to own a book too. My favorite thing to read is recipes!

I have a hard time coming up with meals that we all like! This book sounds like a great one!
My greatest challenge when feeding boys/men is too have alternate meals ready! It seems like they eat dinner, then are hungry again 20 minutes later!!!! I would love to have more healthy options ready to go for them to grab and eat!
Just posted the Facebook comment on mine. Hope I win
Feeding my two young boys and one larger boy has taught me to prepare for seconds. There may be enough for all of us, but some of us want more. I was worried that I would have too many left overs. Not a consern anymore.
Left a comment on facebook!
I have three boys (ages 1-4) and a husband, all of whom are great eaters, but my greatest challenge is getting enough variety to please me. They’re happy eating the same old favorites every week, and I get too bored with that!
I subscribe to OAMM!
The biggest challenge is catching that small window for feeding lunch. To stop the working at just the right moment, when he is willing to admit he could eat instead of skipping the noontime meal. And I’d better have something ready already because he’ll want to make it quick.
And if we skip the noon meal? Then we are all MAD by the time dinner is served.
Thanks for the promo on the cookbook.
