Measuring Cups, Oh, How I Love Thee (TILT)

Have I mentioned that my husband does the dishes around these parts? Well, I am fortunate like that and he does. However, this kind service he provides me after long days of cooking usually comes with a *little* price.

One of those *little* prices includes receiving criticism or critique on my various cooking methods (or mess making methods) and/or my kitchen equipment.

One of those evenings came not so long ago and was focused on my measuring devices. As in, the fact that in his opinion I have WAY too many! Which leads me to today’s question for you – Can you EVER have enough measuring devices for your kitchen?

I do once a month cooking for goodness sake! We use like 20 measuring devices alone in that day! I mean, you can NEVER  have too many it seems. At least they always seem to be missing when you need them.

And if you ask me, measuring devices are like the black shoes of the kitchen; you need a different type depending on the occasion! Let’s explore. . .

You need dry measuring cups. . .

You need liquid measuring cups. . .

You need measuring spoons. . .

And then there are those liquid teaspoon/Tablespoon devices. . .

And pourable bowl devices. . .

And ones where you can mix as well as measure and pour. . .

Then the cool ones where you only are suppose to need one. . .

The options are endless – and so are the occasions. And don’t even get me started on the fact that finding a complete set is rarely a guarantee. I find them in the flour bin, the bathroom, the toy box, the basement and the dresser drawers. No, I don’t know how they get in the dresser drawers! Perhaps they think they are black shoes as well!

What about you? What do you think is the correct amount/type of measuring devices to have around your kitchen?

I like to have two sets of any measuring tool Pampered Chef sells. I love their stuff. There’s even a few things I have threes of, like the batter bowls and the pinch bowls, etc etc.
I am so close to putting laminates pictures of what items go in which drawers. My older kids that know better are the ones that are the biggest offenders.

  2. Just bought measuring cups this week. I love stainless steel ones that I can put through the dishwasher. I have to have at least 2 sets at all times. I also love my long narrow “spice jar” measuring spoons. I love all kitchen gadgets, but measuring things have a special place in my heart. I have 3 pyrex liquid pourable glass cups too (1 cup, 2 cups, 4 cups). And I use them all ALL the time.

Well… I don’t do freezer cooking, but I do cook and bake from scratch. I have 3 sets of dry measuring cups, 3 glass liquid measuring cups (a 1c, 2c & 8c), and probably 4 sets of measuring spoons. Sometimes I think I need another set of each. My thing w/ measuring devices is that I about cannot stand plastic ones (at least for measuring cups) and no odd shapes or designs – I want plain, bowl or cup-shaped stuff. But that’s just me :P I’m sure it’s possible to have too many, but what is “too many” for one person wouldn’t be near enough for the next :P

  4. You would just DIE trying to cook in my kitchen. I have a severe shortage of measuring cups and spoons!

You are missing one! I love the ones that are a cylinder w/ a cup insert that you can push out the dry ingredients (Pampered Chef or Alton Brown) especially for peanut butter! I don’t use it often but can’t live without it.

  6. There is no such thing as too many! I have them not only for cooking but also for making my soaps. I used to have a really cool looking one. I think the kids broke it. Will have to be on the lookout for a new one. *grin*

OMG! I grew up in a kitchen with multiples of everything and every tool that you might possibly need to cook with. It drives me NUTS to not have the right tools. I don’t think there is a correct number, it depends on the space you have and are willing to give up. Perhaps some people can get by with one of everything and washing frequently, but not me!!

I have 3 sets of measuring spoons, 3 sets of measuring cups and 5 or 6 pyrex measuring pourable ones and those are the ones in the kitchen. I also have them in the laundry room to measure the liquids down there! Love Love Love them!
