So I have mentioned a time or two that I am having trouble with red meat this pregnancy. Thought I would give you a little update.
Let me start by saying, I HEART read meat. I have never, and likely will never, think about becoming a vegetarian. I love some protein. I even crave meat, even during this pregnancy. However, EVERY time that I have consumed it since mid March I have gotten violently ill.
I was certain this phenomena would pass once I was past the first trimester. WRONG. It has persisted. The sad part is I really crave red meat (and I am sick of coming up with chicken recipes). My husband and I love eating at Outback. Their cheese fries are out of this world. This last time I ordered a grilled cheese to go with my cheese fries. BORING.
This week I added a roast to my menu plan monday. It was in the freezer calling my name going to waste and I have all these nice fresh veggies from the happy box. I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to fix a roast in the crock pot. I took my chances. . .
By 6 when the roast was done I was feeling really under the weather. I decided to eat it anyways because sometimes eating makes me feel better. . .someone please remind me to throw out the “rules” when pregnant.
After eating I took a bath to help my headache, got violently ill and felt a world better. I would like to think that it was the headache that made me sick, but I have a very strong feeling it was smelling the roast cooking all day that caused the headache and the eating that caused the bleeeccchhhh.
I have no idea if this baby is a boy or a girl but I do know it is not a fan of red meat. I have been calling it my little chick-atarian in accordance with this development. So if you see me say something like “Oh, I’ll just try it to see” and the recipe involves red meat, kindly tell me “NO!” I will still put red meats on our menus (I substitute ground turkey for ground beef anyway), after all, all of you aren’t pregnant! I will just have to figure out a work-around for me and my family.
Thank goodness Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners don’t involve red meat, at least in our family.
Do any of you have wacky pregnancy stories or predictions on the sex of this baby based on my aversions? I’m curious to hear.

I could ONLY eat red meat with Libbie until I was about 16 weeks. Just thinking about chicken made me vomit. So I’m guessing another boy. Even though I want you to have a girl so she can wear Libbie’s clothes. I’m bringing clothes at Thanksgiving and that way you’ll have them in case.
I want to get more wear out of those adorable 0-3 month Christmas outfits!!
Jessie
Yay for winter clothes! And I can do pink pajamas on a boy – they are just going to spit up on them anyway.
Thanks.
My aversion with my last pregnancy were smells! Especially my husbands cologne and coffee!
I craved anything and everything spicy. A weird craving that I had was Gatorade! I couldn’t drink enough of the stuff and I normally hate it and don’t drink it at all! Also I wanted bananas a lot and I rarely can eat them.
I was pretty sure mine was a boy because I was sick the entire pregnancy and with my prevoius (girl) pregnancy I was only sick twice. Congratulations and good luck!
You were sure it was a boy – was it?
I don’t have any wacky predictions for you, but I am 30 weeks pregnant with my first and I can’t stand to smell anything cooking all day (well, besides bread)! I’ve tried roasts, chicken dinners, and ham and bean soup on the stove. It all gives me a serious headache and no desire to eat. So our crockpot has been put away for the time being. I hpoe you get to feeling better soon!
I love the Outback too. I craved cheese fries…still do and I’m all done with pregnant! They do make a nice pork chop there. Have you tried that? Unless of course it’s against your religion! Their shrimp skewers are also quite yummy. Won’t it be funny if baby comes out and absolutely LOVES red meat. Hopefully it won’t mind if you eat it while nursing!
Nursing? Oh no, I hadn’t thought of that! Let’s pray.
My story is exactly yours! LOL! I couldn’t eat any red meat at all during one of my pregnancies. Made me sick, sick, sick. Alas, mine was a girl.
) She still hates most beef products to this day (she likes roast) and she’ll be 18 in a few weeks.
the only time i had a meat aversion, it was a girl
You are right about throwing out the pregnancy “rule” book out of the window. Early in my pregnancy, I had the bright idea to buy a jar of pickle (you know one of our folktale cravings)as a snack for work. Oh this little wasn’t going to have it! The minute the jar was opened and the scent hit my nose, I was so ill and in the bathroom for most of my shift. I had to go home! Do you know my son to this day can not stand pickles. Go figure.
But when it comes to cravings…I loved black olives and piles of it. My son will eat black olives straight from the can.
I truely feel for you! My 2nd son I could only eat fruit. Anything else as you say made me violently ill. Thank heavens it was summer and fresh fruit available at a reasonable cost.
That is really weird, to only be able to eat fruit. Healthy little guy though.
I am a HUGE baseball fan. During my 1st trimester I had tickets to several games. The popcorn would make me sick. The pretzels…sick. The hot dogs…sick. The Sheriff Blalock’s nachos which consisted of chips, nacho cheese (canned variety), chili (canned), sour cream and jalapenos (extra) were perfect. Throughout my entire pregnancy, jalapenos were “Doodlebug’s” favorite thing.
Lurker here…. I had to chime in on this one. I have three boys and one girl. The girl was the only one where I didn’t/couldn’t eat red meat. I ate so much fish with her that I thought I was going to grow gills. The boy pregnancies were always filled with much red meat. Funny thing is my 15 yo boy has become a vegetarian.
