Not Your Mother’s Make-Ahead & Freezer Cookbook {Giveaway}

One of the great things about blogging through the years is the other talented women (and men) that I have had the pleasure of meeting along the way. One of those such people has been Jessica from Life as Mom (and Good Cheap Eats).

Jessica is another freezer cooking guru and she has a new cookbook out, Not Your Mother’s Make-Ahead  & Freeze Cookbook. This cookbook is packed with make-ahead freezer meals that your family will love. And as the title states, they aren’t your “standard” recipes, just like here on Once A Month Mom!

Aside from recipes there are also great tips that you will find invaluable in the cookbook. Here are just a few:

  • Packaging Methods
  • Proper Thawing
  • Keys to Efficiency
  • Equipment
  • Creating your own Bulk Cooking Plan
There are also several meal plans already put together for you with grocery lists.
I wanted to test out a recipe for myself so I chose the Shepherd’s Pie with Green Chile Mashed Potatoes. Doesn’t it look delicious? It was! Absolutely amazing in fact. It has a Southwestern flavor using jalapenos, cumin, and cilantro.
Want the recipe? Well, you are going to have to just buy the book. :) It would make a great Christmas gift for someone (or yourself), especially if they are a freezer cook.
We are excited to be able to give away one copy today as well. Yes, you read that right, one Once A Month Mom reader is going to win a FREE copy.

Here is how you enter to win:

  3. Ali G says:

I am new to the whole freezer cooking thing but I have loved combining everything I need for a crockpot meal and putting in the freezer, then all I need to do is pull it out and toss it in the crockpot and go! I would love to have this cookbook as I am turning to meal planning/once a month grocery shopping/freezer cooking as a means to cook more nutritious meals for my fam on a much lower budget, and this looks like an amazing resource. We moved halfway across the country this year, during a time my husband was looking for work, and so we are trying to pay down a huge amount of debt that we accumulated in that time. I stay at home with my kids and so I’m trying to do absolutely everything I can to help with the bills!

I need to expand my freezer cooking abilities so we will stop eating out so much!

I would love a copy of this cookbook because I really, really want to get into freezer cooking. I have not done much of it because of lack of freezer space but recently have come into more room and want to get ahead of weekday cooking.

  11. Julie Klein says:

I don’t like touching chicken much, so I get it out of the way one time with a bunch of chicken breasts. I bag some raw, and the rest I salt and pepper, bake and freeze so I always have some handy. I’d love this book to learn how to make more complete meals for the freezer!

  12. SKM says:

I always make my take on my mom’s beef stroganoff and I also love to freeze individual chicken burritos.

  13. Monique says:

One thing I love to freeze is breakfast burritos. I would never have time to make them in the mroning before work. It’s so easy to grab one from the freezer and then heat it up at the office.

Freezer cooking helps me be lazy about dinner on a budget! What’s not to love about that!

I like to freezer cook anything my family will eat because it saves me time and money! And I want this cookbook to annoy my husband who has banned me from buying more cookbooks because he says I have too many (and I do) :)

  21. Lindsey A. says:

I am new to freezer cooking and once a month cooking (I’m LOVING it!). I think my favorite so far has been the delicious and healthy breakfast items I can easily heat up for my kids before school. So good and simple!

  22. Chana says:

I want to learn how to freezer cook.

  23. Tammy says:

I can’t pick just one thing I love to freezer cook. I love all of the chicken freezer meals that you can just throw in the crockpot! It’s so easy to throw it in and shred it for sandwiches, over rice, or in a taco! I would love to have this cookbook because I am still learning what to cook. We ate out a lot the first 3 years of our marriage but now we have a almost 1 year old who’s started eating table food and I love the convenience of freezer meals to make sure that he is eating at home and healthier!!

  26. Melissa says:

I have just recently started making large quantities and freezing and I love it! It’s so nice to put dinner in the crock pot then come home from work and smell a home cooked meal without having to keep everyone waiting for me to prepare it.

  27. Rose says:

With running back and forth to chemo treatments and doctor visits, it’s great to have a hot, nutritious and delicious meal without having to tire myself further. OAMC rocks for cancer patients and their friends who want to help. Taking a ready to heat and eat freezer meal really fits the bill, and so much better and tastier than TV dinners. I’d love one of these.

  28. Stacy says:

I love have quick and easy meals on hand. We don’t eat fast food anymore, plus it’s not an option where we live in remote, interior Alaska. Easy meals are a must with a house full of little ones!

  29. Kristin says:

I love making main entrees for dinner. Either things that just need to be thawed and popped in the oven (or directly from the freezer is even better!) or things that are already pre-cooked and just need to be heated. Great meals for those hectic weeknights!

  32. Mandi says:

Probably my favorite item to freeze is casseroles. I make a double batch (or cut a large recipe in half) and put half of it in the freezer for another night. I used this method to stock my freezer for a couple weeks after my youngest child was born. Since that stash ran out, it’s been hard to find time to restock. I would love to see what this book says about efficiency!

  33. Valerie says:

I don’t freezer cook very well and would like to learn how to do it better and I love to sit and look through cookbooks.

  43. Elaine says:

I have a chronic illness and love to make meal ahead on (good days) to have on hand. Cooking is very hard for me and I often end up eating poorly because of that. This would give me a wonderful place to start. We do make spaghetti sauce and freeze as well as a few other things. I would love to expand my selections and make them more healthy too.

I would most love to win this because I’m always looking for new things to make! Freezer cooking has become essential to avoid those thoughts of just taking it easy and picking up food on the way home :)

  47. Chrissy Hess says:

I need meals that are just as ready to go as takeout so that I am not tempted to ask my husband to pick something up on the way home when the day has gotten to hectic (which ends up being a lot of days!). It’s so good to have convenience food that I can afford and that I can control the ingredients of. I like to cook, but I enjoy it more when I have plenty of time. Freezer cooking lets me set aside the time to make great meals.

  48. Amy says:

I like to do chicken pot pie or shepherd’s pie filling in big batches & freeze. With a premade crust (like Pillsbury) or some premade mashed potatoes, I am ready to go!

    Thanks for a great giveaway!

  52. Jenni says:

I don’t do much freezer cooking, but everytime I make a casserole I try to make an extra one to stash in the freezer. I want this cookbook to help me make it more of a planned event, not just an occasional thing. Thank you!

  53. Karen Chaffin says:

  55. I would love to win this book because I have really wanted to start freezer cooking but want to make good meals that will freeze and reheat well! I’ve done a few from magazines in the past with so-so results. I just bought a slow-cooker and want to try again with better recipes!

  60. Heather Gundling says:

I am a busy Mom of four, making freezer meals is a must to keep up with this family!

  61. I started doing freezer meals after being introduced to the concept by my local meal kitchen, which subsequently went out of business. With two startups in the family, we didn’t have the time or money to keep doing the meal kitchen anyway. I’ve purchased three freezer meal cookbooks, only one of which has been worth its salt. It has good recipes, but after a couple of years of the same old, same old, we are ready for something new. Jessica Fisher’s cookbook sounds like the ticket, and I’ve put it on my wish list in case I’m not the lucky winner. Thanks for letting us know about her new book : )

I just need to start freezer cooking!! I have good intentions, but never do it.

I am new to freezer cooking. But I love to make a big batch of pancakes on Sunday and freeze them. It’s so easy to pull one out for my son for a quick breakfast. This book would be helpful in expanding my freezer cooking.

  67. Tanya says:

I love freezer cooking because it means as a working mom (with two little ones) we can actually have a healthy home-cooked meal at the end of the day and eat before 8:00 at night (I’d much rather spend that time with my kids). It also helps me be efficient about what I buy and how to prep the food. This cook book looks as though it would really help diversify what we have in our freezer.

Thanks for the website – love the seasonality!

  68. FrugalMama says:

I cook and/or freeze meal components, such as: ground meat for nachos & tacos; shredded cheese for pizza & nachos; diced bell peppers for pizza & nachos; pancakes & waffles for quick weekday options; marinated meat for stirfry; most baked goods, like homemade bread & cookies.

However, I have found very few complete main courses that I and my family ALL enjoy, so I’m hoping to find such meals!

I wanted her to be able to spend time with her newborn, snuggling and loving on her and less time in the kitchen. So I loaded her freezer up with a few weeks of meals…. Priceless…

  72. Christie says:

  75. Brittany says:

i love freezer meals cause they are a great blessing to receive and easy to give. My church has freezer meal cook days and women get together and cook up to 17 meals per person in ONE day. they always donate multiple meals for the church to keep on hand to help those in need, or after a baby, surgery, a death in the family, or during a prolonged illness – to help out families. being the recipient more than once, these meals make prep and clean time non existent during the recovery of birth and even a tragic miscarriage this past year. and i love donating them as well since i know the blessing they’ve been to me. we are always looking for more ways to make freezer meals. :)

  84. Kara VanSickle says:

Freezer cooking keeps me sane and my family happy :).

The clean kitchen every night, the less amount of waste every night (paper towels) from cleaning, the sanitation of not having to deal w/ raw meat every night, and the quick mindless dinner prep has been wonderful these last several tiresome weeks. Im sold. Its my new way to cook. I would LOVE to have your recipe book to guide and inspire me.

  93. Teresa says:

I’ve done small bouts of freezer cooking for years now but have never needed it as much as I do now. I am babysitting my 3yo grandson in addition to having my own 11yo failure to thrive daughter who both eat evening meals with me. The day slips by and I’m forced to feed them quick, non nutritious meals, that really do not help them gain weight or eat healthy.

My favorite freezer dish to make is creamy tomato-basil soup, it’s fab!

  98. Athena says:

I would love this cookbook because it would make it so much easier for me to do freezer cooking. Don’t get me wrong the web is great and I LOVE reading the recipes on this site but toting my laptop into the kitchen to do some freezer cooking or printing out all the recipes just isn’t working for me! So far I have successfully frozen shredded chicken. It was so easy to have it ready, just thaw and make a great dinner! I’ve also got some veggies and chicken bones frozen for when I decide to make some homemade chicken stock, not sure that’s freezer cooking though (???). I have been LOVING the canning I have done and freezer cooking is the next step for having healthy, homemade foods ready on the quick for my family.

  99. Sally says:

I’ve tried various “cook ahead” or “once a month cooking” type cookbooks, but they haven’t had the healthiest (or tastiest) recipes. We eat a freezer meal almost every day! I “batch cook ” on weekends – it lets us eat good food and save time and money. I love doing a little work for a lot of reward! :)

  121. I love freezer meal cooking! I recently got involved with Wildtree after buying some of their products and doing some of their Freezer Meal Workshops so this will be right up my alley. I really love to make anything ahead that I can…meatball and red sauce, honey balsamic chicken breast!

  122. Tricia Flohr says:

I set aside certain days when I have a little extra time to do some much-loved cooking. I make 2-3 meals & put them in the freezer so that I’m prepared when I learn that someone is in need of one, i.e. when my friend just had baby #3, or another friend & her family just got home from a vacation & she needed to focus on her laundry! I love to bless people with yummy food, & this cookbook would really help me continue to meet my goal in doing that! Thanks for your consideration! :)

  123. Nicole M says:

I would love this cookbook, I am going back to work fulltime. I have been home for over 2 years and this is going to be a HUGE adjustment for my whole family, so if I can make meals ahead, this would help our adjustment and make life seem like it hasn’t changed too much. Thank you for the opportunity!

  124. Jen L says:

I can’t wait until Thanksgiving. What I love to freeze is everything turkey!! I do a turkey spinach stromboli, just dividing up the turkey for leftovers, and a couple other things. I love having it ready to pull out and throw in the oven.

  125. Destiny says:

My favorite things to freeze ahead are a tie between baked pasta or soup. Often, the baked pasta can go right in the oven with no thawing. Talk about an awesoem last minute meal! (Oops, did I forget to get things out for dinner??) Soups are great because they thaw rather quickly or can be put in a pot on the stove and thaw in the pot.

  126. Sheri says:

I keep putting off learning how to freezer cook.

  127. Pancakes are one of the easiest things to make a lot of and freeze for later! With 3 kids, having pancakes already made makes my life easier!!! I don’t have a whole lot of experience with make ahead meals for the freezer, but I would LOVE to start doing this more often!

  128. Ann says:

It’s one skill I really need but have never mastered so this book will finally help me get into freezer cooking. I think the tips here would be so valuable for a newbie!

  129. Nick says:

I love to freezer cook meatloaf! Especially in springtime before the summer heat hits.

  130. Michele Imrie says:

Anything and everything! We are a family of 6! Hubby works shift work. 3 kids in hockey, and I have a home office. Without Freezer cooking we would starve!! LOL!

My husband and I have been OAMC for nearly 12 years. However, we’ve been also making the same recipes for those same 12 years. It would be nice to have this cookbook that includes some new spins. I commend anyone who can come up with great recipes.

I love freezer cooking! I first started cooking with my SIL and her cousin and we have learned so much since we first started. One of my favorite things has been the make-ahead mashed potatoes. My family also likes the stuffed manicotti. It’s so wonderful to not have to worry about what to cook for supper after a long day at work.

  134. Patti says:

I love the convienence of having different meals or parts of meals all ready to go when I need them. I think soups are my favorite things to freeze. My husband loves soup even in 100 degree weather, so I always stockpile during spring.

  135. Jennifer says:

With Kira’s activities and work schedules, I need help with meal planning and prep from both economic and nutritional standpoints. This would be the motivation booster that I need!

  139. Erica B says:

I enjoy freezer cooking especially on busy homeschool days. It is great to not have to stress over dinner. But I have to say my favorite freezer cooking meal is breakfast – I love doing breakfast burritos, veggie and egg cups (in a cupcake pan), and pancakes/waffles. They make our mornings get off to a quick and healthy start. I would love this book because I love trying new recipes – I get bored with the same old things! My family loves it when I experiment on them with new recipes!

  140. Amy Mathews says:

I want this cookbook because I’m just starting out with Freezer Cooking… it would be a great jump-start!

So far my favorite thing to freeze is pancakes – pop them in the toaster for an easy breakfast or tasty snack!

  141. Laura says:

I love to have pre-browned hamburger on hand and I also keep pre-cooked shredded chicken in my freezer. It makes meals quick and easy to pull together!

  144. I LOVE having premade meals in the freezer and would love to have more recipes to add to our freezer arsenal. Our favorite is “hash” type recipes…ground meat with a variety of vegetables. They cook up easily in huge batches, freeze well and are yummy when reheated for easy lunches and dinners.

I love to make casseroles for my hubby to make when I work evenings. When we were both working all day, I loved crockpot meals that I could throw in the crockpot before we left at 5am and have a nice hot meal when we got home at 5pm. I would love this cookbook since you can never have too many cookbooks and I’m sure my husband would appreciate some new recipes!

  148. Liz K says:

I am expecting my 5th daughter and realized recently that freezer meals make my life so much easier. When I have time to cook I double it and freeze one for when I don’t have time.

  149. Suzanne says:

We’re having a baby in the next month and it would be great to have a freezer full of yummy meals!

  150. Greta S says:

I love to freezer cook crockpot dishes- even ordering pizza is not faster than dumping a freezer bag into the slow cooker and turning it on! My husband travels for work most weeks, so I’m the cook AND taxi driver each night. These meals stay warm on nights when everyone is eating at a different time.
I would love to have the cook book because many “conventional” freezer recipes aren’t suitable for us. My 3 year old son is autistic and one of the things we have discovered helps him is restricting gluten from his diet. It’s wonderful that OAMM includes GF recipes that everyone actually enjoys eating and I’m ALWAYS looking to add to the list! Thanks for a fantastic resource!

  153. Heather says:

  154. April Bucknell says:

I have three young sons that I homeschool, and my husband and I are trying to eat as many veggies as possible. Cooking OAM, generally every month but one vegetarian menu and one whole foods menu – plus healthy snacks from the toddler menu – allows us to keep our food budget down, eat our veggies, and eat restaurant-quality meals while running to and from karate, swimming, Cub Scouts, and church. I am always looking for new recipes and tips.

  155. Diane H says:

I have just started freezing meals and have found that it can really help me save time, and more importantly money. Chili and pancakes have been my staples, but I have tried (and my kids loved) the Mac and Cheese recipe you offered on your website. They keep asking for it more. :)
I would love the cookbook as it would give me new ideas and proper procedure on how to do more of my family favorite recipes. Have a great day and thanks for the opportunity!

  156. claire a says:

I discovered freezer cooking when stockpiling meals for an out of town family member indergoing cancer. It was a way for me to help out over a larger span or time- went to vist and spent a day cooking and freezing. Great method of support.Favorite recipe was a fish with a mango salsa. Would love this cookbook to broaden the recipes I use. Even the cover photo makes me want to attempt manicotti.

  157. Cherub Mamma says:

My favorite thing to have on hand in the freezer is seasoned, cooked ground beef. I chop up carrots, onions, celery and garlic and add it to a combination of ground turkey and ground beef. When I want to stretch my dollar even further I add in cooked lentils. I package everything up in generous 2 cup portions to equal one pound in recipes. It saves so much time and cleanup and because the mixture is seasoned, even simple dishes taste better.

I’d love the cookbook so I can add to my freezer cooking repertoire.

  158. CardDolphin says:

I loved going to my local “make ahead meal” kitchen, but the cost was way too high to do on a regular basis. (We actually have a kitchen run by a local woman, not a chain, so it’s healthier and much tastier than the other ones used to be – I tried them all back in their day!) The last time I was there I thought “I could totally do this if I just planned ahead” but it seemed so hard to know how to get started. I found this site over the summer and thought about cooking a menu for about 2 months (building up my courage?) and started with a mini-menu. I am hooked! I received a membership to this site for my birthday and have since rocked another mini-menu and am seriously considering doing the pumpkin menu for fun! It’s great to have meals on hand, and we’ve been keeping our food budget under better control. I really love the slow-cooker recipes – there’s nothing easier on a busy day, or a day when you want to just hang out with family and not stress about cooking. I LOVE the idea of freezer cooking and am slowly embracing it. What I mean is, just cooking one double-sized freezable meal a week and having half that night (and leftovers the next day) and freezing the other half makes me feel so PROUD of myself! Why, oh why, would you pick up disgusting “fast food” when there is something nourishing, simple to prepare and economical just waiting for you at home?!?? It eases my mind to know that on those days when 5 o’clock rolls around and I haven’t even thought about what to make for dinner, that there is an “insurance policy” in my freezer!

Freezer cooking has allowed me to still put great family meals on the table without having to wait until 8-9 pm to eat!! It has also allowed me to play in the garden longer each day without having to stop and prepare a meal start to finish. Now I just warm up and go out play some more!! Thanks Once A Month Mom!!

  294. Amy says:

I love my freezer meals for a very simple reason. I am a working mom and my husband (who also works) has a MUCH more flexible schedule than mine. I was beginning to feel that he was shouldering the entire responsibility for feeding our family. I even found myself getting irritated if I came home and he hadn’t yet decided on what we were having or started preparing dinner. I realized my irritation was less at him and more at myself because I felt like I wasn’t contributing. By having freezer meals, we can plan our weekly menu together and mix in enough freezer meals to make things easier for him and I feel like I have contributed. The best of both worlds!

  295. Katie V says:

  345. Chrystal S says:

I’m completely inept at freezing/reheating. As a broke 22 year old I need something like this! I am learning to coupon because Im very broke and buying in bulk to save money then freezing works out wonky since Im freezer dumb. I work and go to graduate school full time, so freezer cooking is really the only way that I can get a hot meal when I come home late at night, however, I’m not very good at it and I need all the help I can get! Winning this cookbook would do wonders for my stomach, and my wallet.

My favourite thing to make for the freezer are crockpot bags – all I have to do is thaw one out the night before and then pop it in the pot in the morning. I’ve never been a great cook so crockpot cooking has been a great way to ease into eating at home every night (new baby, limited budget, wanting to be healthier). Also baby tends to be at her fussiest right around dinner, so it’s one of the only ways to get a good dinner these days. 381. Venea D says:

This is sort of generic, but I love to freeze dinner! With 4 kids in sports after school, I don’t have time to make dinner after work so I rely on frozen meals to keep us eating real food and out of the drive thrus. My kids are starving after school and I would rather fill their tummies with real food, than grabbing snacks or hitting a fast food joint out of desperation so I have to plan ahead and freeze the meals to get us through :)

  382. Chrissy says:

I love having a meal waiting for me when I don’t feel like cooking.

  384. Valery says:

I’m new to freezer cooking but my favourite quick tips are:
    1) cook ground beef with onions and other seasonings, freeze 1 pound per bag (make it even better by cooking shredded carrot with it, makes it better and you don’t even notice the carrot!)
    2) cook lots of chicken, cut it up, bag it in 2 cup packages
LOVE how quickly I can put a meal together when I have these packages in the freezer. Also speeds up crock-pot meals when I want to through them together before work!
I’d love to receive the cookbook to help me learn more about freezer cooking! Thanks for all you do!!!

I’m brand new to freezer cooking, though I’ve been freezing homemade spaghetti sauce for a while (with the meatballs and sausage) – would love to branch out and learn more about it and possibly have more time – with a 2.5 yr old and 7 month old and doing 25 hours of data entry from home (guess that also makes me the daycare person for my 2) I need things that can save me time and money without resorting to takeout.

  394. Doreen says:

I REALLY need to get back into freezer meals. I used to do once-a-month cooking when I was working before kids but got out of the habit as a stay-at-home mom. Now I have reentered the working world but still need to get a healthy meal on the table before the kids evening activities. Love the emails to help me get motivated!
