Sausage Stuffed Loaf
This sausage stuff loaf surprised me the first time I took it home from a freezer meal swap. To be honest, I had never really eaten a stuffed bread loaf. I was hesitant in serving it to my family, with the main ingredients being sausage and spinach….but much to my surprise they LOVED it. Now when I make it – I have to quadruple the batch so that we have 2 to eat right away and 2 to freeze.

Ingredients:
- 1 loaf frozen bread dough
- .5 lb Italian Sausage, browned
- 5 oz frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- .125 cups grated parmesan cheese
- .5 tsp oregano
- .25 tsp garlic powder
- 1 Tbsp butter, cubed
- 1 egg, lightly beaten
Directions:
Thaw bread dough on a greased baking sheet according to package directions; let rise until doubled. If you haven’t done so the night before, brown sausage in a skillet over medium heat. Drain grease. In a large bowl, combine sausage, spinach, cheeses, oregano and garlic powder; set aside. Roll bread loaf into a 14″ X 12″ rectangle. Spread sausage mixture lengthwise down the center of rectangle. Gently press the filling down; dot with butter. Begin folding edges of dough to the center over filling, pinching to seal. Return loaf to the baking sheet, placing seam side down and tucking ends under. Brush top with egg. Bake 350F for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Let stand 5-10 minutes before serving.
Freezing Directions:
Follow directions above. Cool completely on wire rack. Wrap in foil and freeze up to 3 months. TO SERVE: Thaw at room temperature for 2 hours. Unwrap and place on a greased baking sheet. Bake 350 for 15-20 min or until heated through.
Servings: 4

This looks delicious and would be a great way of using up the leftover frozen bread loaves I have from another recipe. A question – I loathe dealing with frozen spinach. Do you think it would be ok to chop up fresh spinach and use that instead?
Barbara-
Yes – frozen spinach is messy…. I would certainly give it a try, just make sure you cut it up very fine. Let us know how it works out!

What bread recipe did you use for this?
Jodi-
I have used both the Rhodes brand frozen bread loaf (white, comes in a pack of 3) and the grocery store brand.

could I use ground turkey instead of sausage?
Yes, but you may want to add in some more seasonings like Italian Seasoning.
Seriously yummy. Thank you!
This is one of the first recipes I’ve tried on here, it’s most definitely a keeper! Everyone loved it….I’m so glad I made 3 loaves….though I don’t know why I bothered freezing them! Lol! I did use sage sausage and fresh spinach, just cause that’s what I had on hand. Thanks for the great recipe and a wonderful site! I’m completely entralled with it and have been checking out all the helpful aspects of it :)
Welcome we’re glad you found us!
Thank You for posting the recipe. I finally managed to try it today and took some pictures which you can find at http://vulcanatf.livejournal.com/20239.html. I generally bake my own bread so I substituted my bread recipe for the frozen bread and it seems to have turned out quite well.

I would like to know how much fresh spinach is used in the sausage bread recipe…
And…
This site is way too bitchin’
I’ve tried several recipes and I’m so pleased…
mmm…thank you, thank you thank you!
16 oz Fresh Spinach is equal to 10 oz frozen spinach. You may need to blanch the spinach first to incorporate.
