September 2010 OAMM Menu (OAMC, Once A Month Cooking, Freezer Cooking)

cooking-link1

We are back into the swing of things now! Most kids are back-to-school or about to be very soon. In freezer cooking world that means time to get back to routines, crazy dinner time and cooler weather recipes!

I am excited to share with you this new menu. Like last months, I utilized Vanderbilt Wife to help me edit things and make them better (you can hire to edit too) and enlisted some OAMM Readers to do a test run of the menu. Thank you to Candice and Kristina for  your efforts. Hopefully we have ironed out most if not all of the “bugs” in the menu. Take a look for yourself though.

I hope you enjoy these meals as much as our early readers/cooks have. If you are new and not sure how to get started, read here. For frequently asked questions visit here. And there are several other helpful links under the Helpful Hints/Resources section below to help you on your cooking journey. Good luck!

Everything is tomato based except the tostada based.

  3. Tracie says:

I am sorry I meant that everything is tomato based except tostada goop stuff

    • tricia says:

Yes, this menu is heavy on tomato based products, maybe more so than any other recipe. But tomatoes are ready in the garden and on sale on the grocery shelves so it made sense.

  4. Great month. I love how you include the recipe cards. Happy September!

  5. Theresa says:

I look forward to the 1st every month to get the new menu. Unfortunately, I can’t make anything on the dinner side of this menu work for us. Every item (including the tostada goop) has cooked tomatoes in it and we have an allergy. Not a lot of variety this month.

    • tricia says:

Sorry to hear that. You can always go back to September 2009′s menu for an in-season menu that might work better for your family.

      • Theresa says:

So glad you reminded me of that! :) I was sitting here like a kid on Christmas morning who only got socks. Chicken Marsala and Beef Stroganoff are some of our favorites.

        • tricia says:

He he he. I’m so sorry to have disappointed you with this menu. It just goes to show that there is a wide variety of tastes and preferences on this blog! I am so happy that I have past menus to point readers too! Have fun with that one, it was one of the most popular in 2009.

      • Linds says:

We’ll have to try the 2009 one you suggested also- we are a no-tomato family as well.

  6. Thank you all for your information and comments Regards ….

I’m not exactly sure with this recipe but I’ve done cucumbers and pickles and they were perfectly fine.

  8. Susan says:

I really liked the idea of following the seasons. My tomatoes were very late this year and now I have new ideas about what I will do with them. Thank you!

I am new to your site here, I found you through Bargain Briana, but I’m excited to see something like this out in the world. I wish I had known this existed 2 years ago (about then was when my husband took a job that paid only once a month & I was no longer working, I had to drastically change the way I shopped and cooked!) I have been shopping for everything we need for the month, preparing and seperating ingredients for all the meals, but never cooking in advance. I was always proud of shopping for our family of 3 including a toddler with a huge appetite on about $150/month, but now to see that I may be able to save time too is amazing! I can’t wait to go back and see all your recipes/menus :) Thanks for such a great service!

    • tricia says:

Welcome! I hope you find a menu you enjoy.

      • Diana says:

I actually went through that last few menus you put up and picked out recipes my family will eat and added in some recipes we love and made my own menu and grocery list. I just need to do the instructions and labels :) I’m totally loving this!

  15. Melissa says:

Wow, I can’t believe how thorough this meal plan is! And for free! Have you thought about doing a month specifically for those really lean months when we need to budget super wisely? I see February 2010 has some $5 dinners. Maybe even create a menu in line with the Hunger Challenge (https://org2.democracyinaction.org/o/5420/content_item/hungerchallenge).

    • tricia says:

I do each month’s menu seasonally for the best overall savings, but I do see a great point with your suggestion. It is just that it takes a lot of time to come up with each month’s menu so there isn’t a lot of spare time for creative new menus. Although I do have several I am working on and hope to get out soon. I will add this idea to my list.

Hi, I have been watching your site for a while and have decided to start OMC. I wanted to make sure that on the recipe cards it says double does the shopping list reflect those doubles or quad?

  18. Nicole says:

I’m starting out slower and just doubling up batches of the same dinner a couple times a week and freezing the extra. So last night I made Kaylee’s Casserole – it was a big hit! Tonight I’m making Tosdada Goop, because honestly, with a name like that I couldn’t wait to try it!

I have a question for you though! I slow-cooked 6 breasts in a slow cooker with 1 c. water. Is the “broth” able to be saved and used for something else? How do I do it? Could I use it for the chicken and wild rice soup this month? I’ve never used homemade broth before!

I’ll check back here, or you can email me at scrmbld@hotmail.com

Thank you for all your hard work and putting together these delicious recipes!!

hi im new to this so slightly confused. i understand that the menu and grocery list match quantities for 2 families of 4 (so 8 people),right? so if i buy whats on the list and make the menu myself (no partner), each meal serves 8 or do i have to split the list and menu in half since im flyin solo?

    thanks so much!!!

Hi, I tried OAMC for the first time last month and it was great, I love the idea of the Sushi wraps you have planned for the Sept menu, I was really curious how the Nori and cucumbers are going to freeze, has someone done this before, I am nervous to try it.

I made the September menu as my first foray into OAMC. My cooking partner bailed after we did all the shopping but it was worth it, sore back and all, to do the cooking in advance. My husband and I just finished our last meal this week, so time to start again with the October menu (a month behind!) We enjoyed the chicken wild rice soup and the eggplant sausage bake the best. We used the tostada goop on top of homemade baked tortilla chips; what else would you recommend doing with it? Thanks for being so organized!

20 years ago as a working mom I started out doing cooking for 7 days. I then decided hm.. maybe 14 days would be no more time consuming, and before I knew it I was doing it once a month for 30 days. I was feeding hubby and 4 kids at the time. We all helped and it usually took about 7-8 hrs including cool down and freezing time depending on what we were doing. If you have enough main dishes all the meal needs is a salad or side dish. The key to having these meals turn out excellent is starting the soups, sauces or main dishes with a roux of wonderful seasoning. Build the flavor in the roux and the rest of your dishes are half done. I was a cook that put all ingredients in the pot at once, and wondered why everything tasted the same all of the time. My parents-in-law came from Italy and had an Italian restaurant for 27 years and everything started with a roux and was wonderful.I can now make spagetti sauce, chicken tortilla soup, potato soup, braised chicken and many other dishes from the same beginning roux by just adding the rest of the individual ingredients for each recipe. I have learned how to adapt most any recipe depending if it needs to be gluten free, dairy free, meat free etc. There are so many more things available today for those that have allergies to a particular food. Remember to let the food be the star of the roux and keep it simple. My favorite is to saute 1/4-1/2C chopped garlic, 3/4C celery, 3/4C onion, and 3/4 tsp pepper in 1 Tb of EVOO and 3/4 C of chicken broth. Then add the skinned chicken (6-7 pieces), 2 C water and 1 C of chicken broth. Simmer covered until thickened usually about 45 min. Do not let the mixture stick. This amount would be enough for the base of about 3 main dishes.
