Slow Cooker Steel Cut Oats

Steel cut oats make a great, hearty breakfast and I prefer the texture over rolled oats. However, on a busy morning, the last thing I want to do is cook a pot of steel cut oats. Preparing in advance in the slow cooker and then freezing individual portions makes a great way to enjoy a hearty, nutritious bowl of oats any day of the week.

Looks great! Do you reheat in microwave or on the stove?
Reheat in the microwave.
Could you do this with milk instead of water in the slow cooker-and still freeze them?
I do not see any reason why you couldn’t do it this way. The steel cut oats cooked in the slow cooker with just water end with a fairly creamy consistency even without milk though.
Generally, dairy in a slow cooker isn’t a good idea. It tends to curdle.
I am having a hard time finding steel cut oats. All I can find are whole grain rolled oats. We don’t have Trader Joes or Costco around my area…just Walmart, HyVee, Jewels..
My local stores have them with the regular oatmeal. You may also want to look in the organic/natural foods section if they are not with the regular oatmeal. Finally, you can often find them in bulk food stores or sections as well.
