S’more Camping Please

I mentioned earlier this summer that some of my fondest memories of camping included S’mores. What about yours? Was your first experience with S’mores on a camping excursion? In the back yard? In the microwave? Over the grill?

For me, there is something about camping that MUST include S’mores. It is the epitome of perfect bedtime snacks. For me, as a little girl I would anxiously await the setting of the sun while we were camping as a large family. The setting sun meant a trip to the tent to secure a pair of jeans for the evening to ward away mosquitoes, settling into a lawn chair fireside, chatting with cousins and aunts and, of course, S’mores. Each night we would break out the bag of marshmallows and take turns with the campfire forks. My favorite method was to slow roast the marshmallow for as long as I could keep it on the stick. Turning and turning and turning until it was the perfect shade of golden brown.

Sometimes we would have contests to see who could cook up the biggest, puffiest marshmallow. Other times who could get theirs the deepest shade of brown without burning it. Both of these methods require A LOT of patience and timing your marshmallow to graham cracker/chocolate transfer just right so that you don’t lose the marshmallow to the ants along the way.

And then there is the family member that likes to just char theirs. We all have one of them, right? Is it you? To me there is nothing worse than a burnt marshmallow to ruin that S’mores combination. Agree or disagree?

Anyhoo, as my children get older I can’t wait to carry on this tradition with them as well. We have grand plans of camping trips in the near future, complete with roasting marshmallows and stacks of graham crackers and chocolate. What about you? Did you camp this summer and did it include S’mores? I (and Hershey’s) would LOVE to see your “Happiest Camper” photos! Oh S’mores! I think this is the main reason my husband loves camping :) We go to the church family camp weekend every year and last year we were sure to bring a long a LOT of marshmallows, chocolate & graham crackers to share with the group. This year, I have some strawberry marshmallows I can’t wait to try on a S’more! No special memories or photos to share, but I totally agree that it’s just not camping without s’mores!

On a recent camping trip with some friends, we headed for the walk-in sites, so we would be out of earshot and site of the many RVs and loud music of less rustic campers. It was a good haul to get back to our car or out to the water and restroom areas. The first night, I surprised everyone with those new, giant marshmallows. We stuck our giant marshmallows on our skewers, and roasted them to a gooey goodness. As soon as we smashed them together between the graham crackers with the chocolate, we realized what a mistake we made. As we bit the sandwiches, the marshmallow exploded out from all sides, all over our hands, dripping to our forearms, and everywhere else. When we finished, our hands looked like the pan you make rice crispies in.. covered in a mallow goo. We had no way to wash our hands, so one of our non-smore eating friends grabbed a flashlight and led us out of the campsite to the restrooms so we could clean up. We felt like a group of 6 year olds!

The first time my boys had s’mores, they weren’t sure whether to love them or hate the fact that they were going absolutely everywhere and they weren’t sure what to do about it!

We also used to do “gourmet s’mores” with some neighbors of ours pre-kids. We set up a table buffet with all kinds of toppings–instant coffee, PB, jelly, anything we could think of that would taste good (or at least interesting!). We had lots of fun coming up with weird creations. Some of them actually tasted pretty good!

My favorite s’more memory is charring marshmallows over a huge bonfire with friends in college.

When I think of S’mores, I always think of the years and years of Girl Scout camping trips it took to perfect the perfect golden brown (not charred!) color of the marshmallow to fill the smore. It’s still one of my favorite summer treats and one I love to share with my daughter.

I have no memories, I know I had them as a child I just don’t remember. I would love to make a memory with my new girl this fall!

This is going to sound horrible, but my favorite s’mores moment doesn’t include me. If my hubby and sons are eating s’mores, it likely means they are off camping, giving me some peace and quiet. So to me, s’mores = sanity!

During my school years, we would always have an end-of-the-year school picnic and s’mores were a favorite. We were all assigned to bring one of the three ingredients, but it never seemed as if there were enough Hershey’s brought.

I would love to create a moment with all three of my kids. I know my oldest has made smore’s before, but our two youngest children, haven’t yet.

I love making s’mores when we’re camping. And I agree – it has to be the slow-roasted, melting ’til it almost falls off kind of marshmallow. None of that burnt stuff for me, thank you. I’d have to say my most memorable s’more experience was actually at home. We have a fire pit in our back yard, although we don’t use it very often. A few summers ago, we had visitors from Germany. They’d never heard of such of thing, but were a huge hit! It helped that it was a cool evening, so we enjoyed sitting around the fire.
