Things I Love Thursday: Cooking FOR and WITH my kids
Disclosure: DK Publishing provide me with a copy of First Meals and You Can Cook to review. All the opinions in this post are mine, want to know more about how I facilitate reviews, view my full disclosure policy!
There is no doubt that my son is being raised by a cook. He loves to cook. He also loves to “play dishes”. He loves to watch movies that involve cooking or food. His favorite right now is Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. We have also had our fair share of watching Ratatouille. And each time he watches these movies he runs out to the kitchen and grabs whatever cooking utensils he can get his hands on. It makes my heart skip a beat.
He loves to be right there with me and sharing in the mixing and stirring. That’s why I was excited to hear about Annabel Karmel’s new cookbook for cooking with kids, You Can Cook. I love simple to use (for me and for him) cookbooks with great recipes. He isn’t old enough for most of them yet, but he is getting a good start.
Annabel Karmel is a long standing name in baby food making. You might notice in the Baby Food section that we borrow quite a few of our recipe ideas from her cookbooks. To me she is the Betty Crocker of baby food.
In addition to her kids cooking book, she also has another cookbook First Meals. I haven’t talked a lot about baby food recently here but that is going to change. I have been going through some new adventures with Tessa and this cookbook has really helped me come up with some new ideas and concoctions for her. I will be sharing more of those in the weeks to come.
And since I know there A LOT of you in the baby stage, I have a copy of each book to giveaway, one to each of two lucky readers. Here is how you can enter to win:

Greatest challenge is the MESS! I promise we often have a whole meal’s worth of food under the table by the time the meal is over. A close second is just trying to get him to try anything! I’m sure he’d like more things if he’d just put them in his mouth in the first place instead of instantly saying, “Me no like ____.” Aaaaaaaarrrrrgggghhh! Thanks for the giveaway!
My almost 2 yr old is very picky right now. I thought my two older children were picky but nothing compared to him.

I think my greatest challenge with Sofi will be the extra food I will have to buy and the strain it will be on our grocery budget. I plan to make all of her food myself so I’m hoping that helps with the cost. My greatest challenge with Amelia is just trying to get her to eat enough. Luckily she loves fruits and veggies but doesn’t care too much for meat and just doesn’t eat much at one time. So it’s taking her a very long time to gain weight. She’ll be two next month and still only weighs 16 lbs! 17 on a good day
My little one is 16 mos old and also weighs 17# on a good day. It’s rough getting dirty looks all the time from ppl wondering if we feed her, or asking when she turns 1… Doh. Glad to know there’s another petite little girl out there and that we’re not alone!

My biggest challenge is getting my 3 year old to eat and not make too big of a deal about it – I’m better some days than others. Thanks for a great giveaway!

Right now my greatest challenge is getting the younger to eat. Our 3 year old is entering the “I don’t like it” phase, so is teaching the younger one that phrase. Also when he is done, the younger pushes his plate aside too, even if he was still hungry.

Hmmm…greatest challenge…that would be interesting him in eating anything that remotely resembles a vegetable or meat! Or even tasting it
My greatest challenge is making sure she gets good food — especially when others are trying to feed her or I’m, frankly, pregnant and too tired to cook well for a bit

the greatest challenge was keeping up with how OFTEN they need(ed) to eat. It seems every time i turned around from cleaning up the table after a meal/snack, they’re hungry again!

My greatest challenge is making sure he doesn’t destroy the kitchen w/ a complete mess!

My greatest challenge with my little granddaughter is getting her to sit through the meal and finish her food. Her parents let her get up and down while eating rather than making her sit until she’s finished. So she thinks that is how meals are done. It’s frustrating. Thank you for the giveaway and chance to win.

My biggest challenge in feeding DD is, sadly, me! Going on 7 mos pregnant with a high-risk baby, and still suffering greatly from all-day nausea and vomiting, I have no ambition to cook or clean up. Hoping to be a better mom soon, because I love to cook and want DD to be a good eater like DH and I!

My greatest challenge is just getting him to eat more than a couple of bites! He is so very picky and when he does like something, he loses interest and wants to go play. It’s like pulling teeth trying to feed my 18 month old!

My greatest challenge is cleaning up my own messes! I love to cook, but hate to clean

My biggest obstacle is that my toddler is developing opinions regarding what to eat and thinks surviving off of goldfish and cheese and crackers is acceptable.

Picky-ness! “I don’t yike dat!”
My biggest challenge is finding things that LOOK good as well as taste good – for some reason my toddlers are concerned about what their food looks like. If it’s too mushy looking they say “eww..” If it’s too green they say “eww…” If it’s too wet looking (they aren’t soup eaters) they say “eww…”

My greatest challenge was trying to figure out if they were eating enough nutrients. It was always hard to tell how much they had eaten and how much they needed!

I really struggle with the mess. I know I need to let my little girl feed herself more, but I HATE the clean up!!! Plus SHE hates the clean up. Ughh…
Would love to have this for me and my little girls! email subscriber
Yes! Love cooking with my 2 1/2 year olds, and for my 8 month old…. thanks for the opportunity!
Love cooking with my kids! My toddler isn’t really that picky (knock on wood!) but there are times when he just doesn’t eat much. Not variety, but quantity if that makes sense. Now, his big brother, he’s super picky!! That’s a definite challenge.
I’m an RSS suscriber too.

My greatest challenge has been keeping my floors clean! LOL My son likes to throw food he doesn’t want….it’s a challenge right now!

Greatest challenge is getting her all the right nutrients! Plus she is starting the No phase, even with things she likes.
I call it the toddler condition. The biggest challenge is remembering that just because he didn’t like it one day, doesn’t mean he won’t like it the next, and vice versa! I am already an FB fan. Thanks!
