Last week was the letter “N”. I am happy to report that daddy taught him how to point out other people’s noses. He can’t find his own but he can find others. We are still working in the mirror to see if it helps. On a funnier note he can point to where his mouth is but if asked to point out my mouth, no go. Too funny! I love to watch them learn.

This week is the letter “H”. I am hoping for us to focus on words like “head”, “hands”, “horse” and “hugs”. Here is what I have lined up.

Books:

We read tw0-three books each morning after breakfast. This seems to be the best time to get him to sit without wiggling and stay engaged. Here are the books that I got:

  • My “H” Sound Box by Jane Belk Moncore, illustrated by Colin King (there are a series of these for lots of letters and sounds so you will be seeing them frequently on my list)
  • How About a Hug? by Nancy Carlson

Activities:

  • Sometime during the day we sit in front of the mirror and I point out mommy’s head and hands and Isaac’s head and hands. I ask him to point to the same. I place his hand on my head or my hand when I am talking about it and on his when we are talking about his.
  • We have pulled the “h” magnet off of the refrigerator and played with it many times. Also kept it within his grasp on the refrigerator.
  • I have a set of letters and number bath toys and we have placed the “h” in the bathtub for playtime.
  • We are going to try giving hugs this week. We have kisses down really well so I am interested to see if we can get hugs down.
  • Daddy and grandma have also joined the fun when they are interacting with him at playtime.
  • We are going to pick up on signing again. I even got a Baby Einstein video this week to see if it helps (more for me than for him I think).

Sounds:

  • he, he, he – he already likes the sound of laughing so this one should be pretty easy.
  • ho, ho, ho – it’s time for Christmas right?

Songs:

Looking for some songs to teach your child? Here are some that we will be singing this week:

  • Elmo’s World – Wild Wild West – Okay, so this is a video not a song. But we LOVE some Elmo around these parts. We haven’t really watched Sesame Street that much but he does have an Elmo talking fun. He thinks it is the funniest thing.

Foods

  • I don’t think we are ready for things like hummus and horseradish, so I am not too sure here.
  • We will do hamburgers.
  • Perhaps even some ham. (I’ve been wanting to try new proteins anyway)

What Else?

What else would you do when focusing on the letter “h”? Any activities or games that you have done in the past? No matter the age of the child, feel free to add your favorite books, songs, foods, activities, and more below in the comments section. We would love to hear them and share them with others.

I signed with my eldest lots…some with my second…but I have found that the addition of signing while learning helped tremendously with retention. Like my youngest is not so consistent with her colors yet when you ask her to identify…but if you hint with the sign…she knows it right away…meaning she knows the signs better than the actual colors themselves. But it’s just a matter of time, I’m sure. My eldest and I learned from Signing Time! Check out your PBS station. We have all 20 or so episodes recorded. All great! #5 is the alphabet. :) They are the best!!! Also, you’ll notice that both Joe and Steve in Blues Clues sign fairly frequently. So you’ll get some signing reinforcement there too.

Keep up the great work. I love the kid ideas and the freezer cooking tips. Huge fan!
