This week brought to you by . . .the letter “N”
We are focusing on the letter “N” because I really want him to learn the parts of the face. However, there are not any cool animals I can think of that start with “N” which is a bummer for us because Isaac is really into animals these days. Nectarines are in season so we might be eating those. What other ideas do you have?
Books:
We read two-three books each morning after breakfast. This seems to be the best time to get him to sit without wiggling and stay engaged. Here are the books that I got:
- My “N” Sound Box
by Jane Belk Moncore, illustrated by Colin King (there are a series of these for lots of letters and sounds so you will be seeing them frequently on my list)
- Arthur’s Nose
by Marc Brown
- If You Had a Nose Like an Elephant’s Trunk
by Marion Dane Bauer
- Whose Nose and Toes?
by John Butler
Activities:
- Sometime during the day we sit in front of the mirror and I point out mommy’s nose and Isaac’s nose. I ask him to point to the same. I place his hand on my nose when I am talking about it and on his when we are talking about his nose.
- I have printed out pictures of Isaac’s friends and family members whose name start with N: Aunt Naomi
- We have pulled the “N” magnet off of the refrigerator and played with it many times. Also kept it within his grasp on the refrigerator.
- I have a set of letters and number bath toys
and we have placed the “n” and the “9″ in the bathtub for playtime.
- We will be smelling all kinds of things this week. If it can be smelled, we will make a point to smell it.
- Newspaper – No, I’m not going to teach him to read the New York Times! But he does love to play with the paper often. So I am going to spend some time letting him play with it, crinkle it, make balls with it and whatever else we come up with. Then I am going to let his dad bathe him of his black hands.
Sounds:
- nnnnn
- No? – Not sure I want to teach him this yet, I think I will hold off for now.
Songs:
Looking for some songs to teach your child? Here are some that we will be singing this week:
- Not sure – any suggestions?
Foods
- Nectarines
- Nuts – ONLY if your child is past the stage where it is safe to introduce them and you know they are NOT allergic.
What Else?
What else would you do when focusing on the letter “N”? Any activities or games that you have done in the past? No matter the age of the child, feel free to add your favorite books, songs, foods, activities, and more below in the comments section. We would love to hear them and share them with others.

You could always focus on “a horse says NNNeigh!” instead of picking an animal that starts witn N.
a newt?
Narwhal is an animal that starts with a “N”. And sticking with the ocean animals, my son loves Nemo. We have the movie Nemo, but also we have books about him for reading and for coloring and other activities.
i think newts are way cool. and the nautilus. they live in the ocean, too.
Here are a few animals or such that begin with the letter “N”:
Naked Mole Rat
Naked Bats
Northern Birch Mouse
Nubian Flapshell Turtle
and maybe a Newt?
Hmm, maybe a little advanced for my 10mo. . .but I will have to look into this whole Newt thing!
Neons are pretty common fish with bright colors…would be fun to get one at the pet store.
Nutria are rodents that are so gross kids think they are cool. I saw one swimming in our neighborhood duck pond and I was so disgusted I couldn’t get away fast enough. But when I told the kids, they leaned in further to check him out. Figures, right?!
Oh, and Nightingale. Cinderella sings a song about them. “Sing, sweet nightingale…ah, ah, ah” My two year old LOVES singing the song…so that might be fun.
the Nilgau is a type of animal that looks like a cow and is primarily found in India. Not sure if this helps – my son latched onto the Nilgau when he was pretty little. We couldn’t really find any tiny people books on them, but they do have a neat name, and I found pictures of them in various places. We did the newt also, the Newfoundland puppy, and the Nightingale. We sang the Nick-Nack Paddy Whack song (this old man) and I showed him how to turn of the night light which had a very safe huge switch on it (it was actually a car)that you just pushed from side to side. Hope this helps.
