TRADITIONAL July 2011 OAMM Menu (OAMC, Once A Month Cooking, Freezer Cooking)

cooking-link1

Summer is in full swing where I’m from, and despite my hopes for more relaxing schedules with school out, I find our days are just as busy. Alth0ugh freezer cooking seems to take a different twist during the summer, I still appreciate the convenience of make-ahead meals I can quickly thaw and grill. Many of those meals are included on the July 2011 Traditional Menu.

I hope you enjoy these meals as much as our early readers/cooks have. If you are new and not sure how to get started, read here. For frequently asked questions visit here. And there are several other helpful links under the Helpful Hints/Resources section below to help you on your cooking journey. Good luck!

Test Cooks

Each month we have some wonderful volunteers who “test” out the menu prior to publication. They do an amazing job of helping to eliminate confusion and mistakes. They may not catch everything but they sure do catch A LOT! Here is a little bit about this month’s test cook:

  • Amber Friedli is a mom and wife. She has 2 girls ages 12 and 3. She works as a nurse about 30 hours a week and enjoys cooking.

Was there supposed to be a link for the Bacon Jalapeno Bites? It doesn’t seem to be working. Thanks!

  2. Trisha says:

Thanks, Tricia for all that you have created here. I am new and can’t wait to use it. So far, I have downloaded two months. I downloaded them to Excel and the Directions come over as ##########. What am I doing wrong? I have to go back to the website and copy and paste them, format, etc. Would love a time saving tip if anyone has one.

    • Tricia says:

Those ### just mean that the cell has too much info in it for it’s size. If you resize the column/row you should be able to see them. No cutting and pasting needed. The link that explains about the yellow box also explains that too. Hopefully this is the fix you need.

  3. Joy says:

What do you mean when you say about meat “it can be frozen beforehand if handled properly”? I have lots of meat in the freezer to use, but unsure if it can be thawed to prep and then re-frozen….

  4. Joy says:

OK-one more question: I cannot find egg roll wrappers…. any hints?

    • Tricia says:

I found mine in the freezer section, close to the phyllo doughs, etc. You might want to ask someone at the grocery store. You may also need to go to a specialty grocer.

      • Jodi says:

Here in Ontario in various grocery stores I regularly find the eggroll wrappers along with wonton wrappers in the produce section near the beansprouts.

    • Lauren says:

I found mine at Walmart in the Veggie case next to the tofu.

  5. Rena says:

Thank you so much for this. This is the first time that I have done this and you made it super easy. I did double check all my qtys and stuff because I do live so far away from the store. I spent a total of 8 hrs in the kitchen. I have been looking for something like this because I have thought about doing it but was so over whelmed trying to figure out how to do it on my own. Thank you!

  6. Teresa says:

Anybody have an estimate on what the cost is for the month to make. My husband is not sold on the idea due to thinking it will be too big of an initial cost.

    • Tricia says:

The first month is the most expensive as far as overall grocery bill as you are buying groceries for the month to freeze. However, once you do one month the savings starts to become VERY evident in month 2. For one family of 4 it usually runs $150-$300/month for the 30+ meals. That makes it less than $5 an entree for 4, making price per serving SMALL.

  7. Holle M says:

I’m having trouble changing the number of servings on the Google Docs recipe cards. Any tips? I’ve tried “Save a Copy” but it isn’t giving me that as an option. Thank yoU!

    • Tricia says:

It probably means that you are not signed into Google Docs or you don’t already have an account. You will need to create an account or log in. It is free.

  8. Christine says:

I am so glad I found this site. It is just what I was looking for. I can’t wait to go shopping and start cooking.

  9. Sara says:

    Hey Tricia,
I’m doing the big cook this weekend with my new friend but I can’t get the yellow box to adjust to another number? Glitch or user error? Thanks!!
