Pigs in a Blanket

May is here, and we’re heading into warmer months. Keeping the season in mind, this month’s menu features several hand-held meals such as Pigs in a Blanket, and Barbecue Beef Sandwiches, perfect for a quick meal before the baseball game. It’s also time to start dusting off the grill, as several grilled recipes are featured this month as well. If you don’t have a grill, consider using your oven’s broiler or a stovetop grill pan instead.

I hope you enjoy these meals as much as our early readers/cooks have. If you are new and not sure how to get started, read here. For frequently asked questions visit here. And there are several other helpful links under the Helpful Hints/Resources section below to help you on your cooking journey. Good luck!

Test Cooks

Each month we have some wonderful volunteers who “test” out the menu prior to publication. They do an amazing job of helping to eliminate confusion and mistakes. They may not catch everything but they sure do catch A LOT! Here is a little bit about this month’s test cook:

  • Jennifer Ries – “Being a working mom with a husband that has two jobs and two busy kids (4 and 2), I don’t have much time between getting home and dinner time to worry about what’s for dinner.  I was invited to join a monthly Supper Swap which has made the dreaded meal time hour so much easier.  I am now addicted to freezer cooking and don’t know what I would do without it.”

Thank you so much Jen, for helping us out in the kitchen this month!!

printable recipe cards points to June 2011 recipes. Thanks for the preview though!

    • Tricia says:

Major OOPS! That is fixed now but you should note that if you printed those recipe cards they aren’t tested yet. :) You all are EARLY risers! :)

  2. Teri says:

I there, the May 2011 Printable Labels
did not have a link to go to. Thanks for all you do!!

  3. Amy says:

On the Google Doc for May, I can’t the yellow box for some reason. The Formula has me locked out. Is it just me?

  4. Amy says:

oops…I left out “change” the yellow box…in my comment.

  5. Lindsay says:

Grocery list for 8 servings says I need 208 gallon freezer bags?

    • Tricia says:

Did you create that list PRIOR to last evening? I made some changes so that it will figure them more accurately. I finally figured out a unique formula for doing so. Perhaps going back and recopying the spreadsheet and just figuring that would help. Or if you hold a second I will figure the new amount for you. :)

      • Tricia says:

The correct amounts are as follows:
        52 each gallon freezer bags
        12 each pint freezer bags
        4 each 8×8 pan

Does that sound more like it? Sorry about that.

  6. ellen says:

hi, same here — grocery list for 4 servings says I need 104 gallon freezer bags, 32 pt freezer bags and 2 8×8 pans…? is that right?

also, this may be a stupid question but is there anyway to easily convert the needed amts to grams and such..I am an American stuck in Canada :) and I am also having to convert it which I don’t do a great job at!

    • Tricia says:

Yes, you too probably downloaded before I found a fix to that problem. You can follow the directions I gave the other reader or if you enter your servings here I can run the calculation for you. Sorry for the inconvenience.

As for conversion calculators, this is the best one I ran across, but it might be time consuming. Sorry – http://www.gourmetsleuth.com/cooking-conversions/gram-conversions.aspx. I also use Kitchen Lite an iPhone app that would likely be very helpful to you if you have a smart phone. Good luck!

  7. Samantha says:

So I was looking at the menu recipe cards and it says for a family of 4 under chopping amounts .5 lbs. But then I was looking at the recipes and one says 3 lbs and another says 2 lbs so i’m assuming its supposed to be 5 lbs there. Then under the grocery list the pork chops again say 3 lbs. So I think there might be a glitch somewhere. I haven’t looked anywhere else yet so I don’t know if there is anywhere else the amount is wrong

    • Tricia says:

Thanks for the heads up on that, you are correct. The grocery list is right but the amounts to thaw on those two items were wrong because their formula was missing somehow. I have updated that and it should be fine now. It shouldn’t have a huge impact on things as those are just thawing amounts.

  8. Heidi says:

I just discovered your website this week and am stoked to try your method out! Not only is it a wonderful concept, but the recipes you use sound delicious!

  9. Stasia says:

I’m having trouble knowing how much pork chops I need. The grocery list says 6 lbs (for family of 8), the thaw amount says 32 lbs, and if you adde the amounts need for the recipes it is 10 lbs. Add to that the fact that I live in Canada and have to convert to kg when I grocery shop and I’m very confused!

    • Tricia says:

Well, let me take a closer look and see what might be happening. . .

      • Tricia says:

Turns out you found a mistake in the math/formulas. That mistake made it past 2 revisions and test cooks. So sorry. The correct amount has been entered on all documents and the correct amount for a family of 8 is 10 lbs. Sorry about that.

  10. Kris Z says:

I’m SO excited to have found you!!!!!!! I’ve tried my own “bulk cooking” before, but tire of the same old things month in and month out.

As a mom to 3 kids under 5, I truly appreciate all the hard work you’ve put in to this amazing system.

I cannot WAIT to get started, and am making my grocery list as soon as I log off!!

  11. Becky says:

Thanks for doing this website–it’s great and just the inspiration I needed to get my freezer cooking done. I found a few errors that I thought I’d mention to help everyone out (family of 4). 1.33 TBSP Worcestershire sauce (Grilled Chicken Fajitas) and 1 c whipped cream cheese (Pinwheels) were missing from my grocery list (it only had 4 oz cream cheese for Stuffed Burgers). Also it had 0 oz vegetable stock (need 0.66 cups, I don’t know conversion). Finally, the grocery list had 1 cup dried cranberries (the correct amount), but my printout of the Breakfast Cookies (family of 4) called for 4 cups dried cranberries (all the rest of the ingredients here are correct). I also had the wrong amount of pork (3 lb) in my grocery list, but I see that has been mentioned in previous comments.

    • Tricia says:

THANKS! We got those all fixed up! It is amazing how 6 sets of eyes can still miss things.

      • Sarah says:

So in preparation for my big cooking day tomorrow I was reading these posts. I too have just now noticed that the cream cheese is off for family of 8. So I feel that the fixes as previously mentioned are not fixed. I too received the odd amount of 208 freezer bags, I’m short on my 8×8 pans so… Kind of frustrating at 11pm at night to realize this. Does this only happen with the free ones because this has made me really rethink getting a membership. I am really trying to plan all aspects of my budget.

  12. angela says:

How do you print the recipe cards. I can’t seem to get them to format correctly to print on paper. Thanks~

  13. Jamila says:

What kind of Chicken is used? Whole chicken? Breast meat?

    • Tricia says:

You will have to look at the grocery list for the types of chicken used. Most commonly it is boneless breasts for ease of use but you are welcome to substitute what is on sale.

  14. Jen says:

Ok, this might be a dumb question, but where it says wheat flakes for the breakfast cookies, is that like rolled wheat or wheaties? Would wheaties work do you think?

    • Pam says:

Not dumb :). Yep, Wheaties would be great!! I used Total cereal because that’s what I had. Corn flakes or bran flakes would work great too!

  15. Misti says:

What do you normally plan for sides?

  16. Kendra D says:

When I download the printable menu cards all the directions read “###########”. Help!

  17. Vanessa B says:

Ever since I made 2 freezer meals at MOPS years ago I have been intrigued with freezer cooking but I haven’t tried it on my own yet. I’ve been reading & keeping up with your site for awhile. I am going to try some of the recipes this month. Thanks so much for all the information you have on your site! I love it.

  18. Barb S says:

I was trying to download the instruction sheets for May and June; but when I click on the file button to get the Download As, nothing happened. I didn’t get the drop down menu that I did before. Is that a glitch with Google or me? Thanks.

  19. Amanda M says:

It is now September but i am choosing to cook the May 2011 menu instead :) It has been a few months since i last cooked and the recipe cards are set up differently. It looks like i need to enter the # of people i am cooking for into the yellow box in the google doc to give me the accurate quantities…unfortunately the doc is in view only and i can’t make that change…it could totally be i am missing something though. Help?

  20. Rae Ann says:

Oh my goodness! This is my new fave cooking site! Thanks so much for all the recipes and planning!
