March is a transition month of sorts.  We crave the warmth of spring, but winter is still holding on for a while.  Comfort food is still top on menu plans in our house, but we will be incorporating a few lighter meal items as we look towards warmer days.

In your grocers produce aisle, you will likely see the emergence of  asparagus, strawberries, lemons, broccoli, salad greens, and peas, as winter gives way to spring.

A full pan of Ham Balls, ready to eat.

The Traditional menu is designed for the “traditional” or “average American family”. It is favorites you would find in a majority of kitchens across the country. If you aren’t the average american family you may wish to try out one of our specialty menus. If you are new and not sure how to get started we have a wonderful series starting with 5 easy steps to get you on your way to once a month cooking. Good luck!

**Stay tuned on the 5th and 10th of March as we have accompanying Traditional Mini Menus coming out then that you might enjoy if you are looking for a lighter cooking day or are just getting started with freezer cooking.

Test Cooks

Each month we have some wonderful volunteers who “test” out the menu prior to publication. They do an amazing job of helping to eliminate confusion and mistakes. They may not catch everything but they sure do catch A LOT! If you are interested in test cook, feel free to volunteer. Here is a little bit about this month’s test cooks:

  • Ruth Gilbert -
I have been a cooking since I was fifteen.  My Mom and Dad always worked two jobs each so it was up to me to do the cooking. I’m retired from my real world job.  Although I keep busy with cooking community cooking classes at our local vocational school.  I also teach cooking classes and candy making classes through my Pampered Chef business. I am a lover of life and of people so this opportunity was perfect for me.

p.s. the heading of this page ‘traditional’ spelled wrong :)

    menu looks great!

  2. kerry says:

haha! sorry, misspelled words are a pet peeve of mine :)

  3. Kalyn says:

Thanks for including one of my recipes; always appreciated!

  4. Ott, A says:

Thanks for giving my Egg Brunch Casserole in the Crock Pot a shout out. Gotta love something that cooks while you sleep.

  5. Andrea says:

Kind of a silly question, but, when making the southwest chicken wraps, how do you keep the filling from falling out when you grill it on both sides if the ends are still open? Or do you fold it like a burrito? Thanks in advance!!

  6. Carmen says:

I don’t get the part where you put how many people you cook for in the yellow box. First of all it doesn’t let you. Second, when I click on one of the recipes (thinking maybe that was the problem) there are no yellow boxes in which to put any numbers. So, what am I doing wrong?!

  7. Malea says:

Alright … I completed my cooking day! All by myself took about 9 hours! It would have taken longer, but I didn’t complete the wraps or any of the breakfasts because I was having a family gathering the next day and wanted to make all of the breakfasts for that. I wasn’t able to complete the wraps because I didn’t have enough chicken. Could someone look into that … I did end up having too much chicken for the creamy chicken pockets … that might be where the error occured. We ate the Turkey Meatloaf and it was great … my husband said it tasted gourmet! Hahah

    • Rebecca says:

I also had this problem with the chicken. The Creamy Chicken Crescents had waaay to much chicken–I’m a little worried they’re going to be a little dry, because the chicken:cream cheese ratio seemed off. I ended up skipping the stuffed shells b/c I realized I wasn’t going to have enough. Good thing rotisserie chickens are on sale at my grocery store on Sundays!

  8. April says:

I have issues w/ the rows on the recipe cards not being large enough to show all the text. I’ve try to “Auto fit row height” but that doesn’t work. Any suggestions?

  9. Lisa S says:

I made the sausage scones last night; since they aren’t a OAMM recipe I thought I would comment here. I substituted cheddar for the parmesan and used “Boulder Sausage” brand breakfast sausage because it was the only one without casings so easier that way.

They are good, but not a lot of sausage flavor. Mostly “scone” flavored. My son really likes them, which is what counts, and because they have protein, he can have them as a breakfast entree, unlike the strawberry chocolate chip ones I made last month, which I decided were desserts :)

My suggestions — buy a more flavorful sausage, and/or use the sausage grease instead of an equal amount of butter, and use the parmesan cheese if you aren’t sensitive to it as we are, or add extra salt.

  10. Lindsey says:

Hi! I am going to start doing this wonderful idea that you all have! I am super excited, but I have one question… On the Sausage Scones, when I put in 4 people, it didn’t change the amounts on the recipe card. Is that my computer error? If so, I can change it by myself, but I was wanting to doublecheck that I needed to!

  11. Celeste S. says:

I had a question. If I were to cook for just one or two would you still recommend cooking the crockpot recipes in the crockpot? It just seems like there wouldn’t be enough in the crockpot to stay most and the food would end up dry and or burnt?

    • Tricia says:

You could easily cook them on the stove top also. If you are cooking this menu for 2 you could do it in the slow cooker still because that would mean that you were cooking almost a full batch. 2x (2 servings) = cooking 4 servings. Good question though.

    • lisa says:

Celeste- Those recipes are designed for slow cooker/crock pot cooking and shouldn’t get burnt or dry. If you do have concerns however, I would suggest cutting the cooking time down and certainly cooking on low.

  12. Celeste S. says:

    *moist not most :)

  13. Erin S says:

Tried these for my first ever OAMC experience. It was a CRAAAAZZZY cooking day. I wrote about it:
