Are you a person that likes to see the menus visually? Perhaps you should check out the July 2012 Whole Foods Menu via Pinterest to see the yummy goodness you will be cooking up on this menu. Not sure what Pinterest is all about, check out what Once A Month Mom has to say about it.

Test Cooks

Each month we have some wonderful volunteers who “test” out the menu prior to publication. They do an amazing job of helping to eliminate confusion and mistakes. They may not catch everything but they sure do catch A LOT! If you are interested in test cook, feel free to volunteer. Here is a little bit about this month’s test cooks:

  • Nina Terheyden - I’m a stay at home and work from home mom that loves to cook, never has time to blog like I used to….love to scrapbook, and make the memories to go in the scrapbook! I’m considering starting private cooking lessons for people that need help with basics.

Get Started

Are you new to Once A Month Mom or once a month cooking (oamc) in general? If so, you might want to spend a few minutes (or hours) on the Get Started Series. If you are in a real hurry to catch on we have written some simple steps for getting started. Welcome!

Don’t forget you can always go back and use July 2011‘s menu if you are looking for something different!

I don’t have a waffle iron. What changes(if any) would need to be made to make them pancakes?

  2. YOU are exactly the reason I don’t blog about food anymore – girl, you are amazing!!! Seriously, where is the book?… I’d buy it. Any chance you can get one uploaded to LuLu???? I would LOVE to give these as Christmas presents…

Amazing job on this. Can’t wait to dig more into it – telling everyone I know!

  3. Melissa says:

Attempting my first go at this! Everything looks delicious! I have a small kitchen so I’m interested to see how I get creative. Been reading all the articles I can so I think I’m pretty prepared to give this my first shot! Thank you!

  4. Jenifer says:

The pork chop link isn’t working. Thanks for all your hard work!

  5. Diane says:

Can’t download the Grocery List spreadsheet. I got the recipe cards, but the Grocery list loads in Google Docs, then the whole menu gets greyed out so I can’t download it.

    ???

Really excited about some new recipes!

  6. Keri says:

I think there might be something wrong with the garlic calculations on the grocery list — I am cooking for 4 people and it is tell me i need 132 cloves of garlic — at least we wont have vampire problem this month!

    • Tricia says:

Well, you are right, it was a bit inflated BUT this menu does actually have A LOT of garlic. The total cloves for 4 people is still 104. Garlic is in season? :) It seems like a lot but it is also spread out over many dishes so don’t fret too much.

  7. Lisa S says:

Great looking menu!! One note for the Mediterranean lasagna, the recipe cards don’t adjust the yellow box to match the first sheet, it is set at 8. Setting it by hand seems to work fine. The chopping amounts and shopping list are adjusted for the number in the yellow box already.

  8. Brandell says:

I’m having a problem downloading the recipe cards. It doesn’t convert the amounts to match the # of people (4) and I’m getting a server error message….any suggestions?

  9. Monica says:

Great menus! Wondering about the amount of peaches required. The shopping list calls for 4 med(cooking for 4). The recipe for the pork chop calls for 6 tbsp of diced peaches, so just wondering if something is amiss?

    Thank you.

  10. Lisa S says:

Tricia, or anyone else using this menu, have you found a whole foods/unprocessed brand of tortellini for the creamy tomato pasta? The ones I could find online had huge lists of ingredients.

  11. amy says:

Is there a way to edit the google docs/instructions to leave out a meal? I want to follow the whole foods menu, but we have an egg allergy so I’m leaving out recipes that contain that (that can’t have a substitute- the crepe). New to this all and trying to figure it out!

  12. Dyana Schroeder says:

The sweet corn chowder recipe doesn’t say what to do with the cooked bacon. Is this a garnish, or something we add back into the soup? It’s on the stove now, so a quick reply would be great! Thanks!

    • Susan says:

In the original recipe, it says to add it when you add the vegetables and chicken broth.

When we made it we put it as a garnish on top with the cheese.

  13. Erin says:

Been doing this about every other month since April (skipped June) and loving it!! Noticed that the quantity for the zukes and summer squash aren’t jiving between grocery list and chopping amounts. Did I miss something?

    • Erin says:

      Nevermind… I figured it out.

    • Tricia says:

WAs there there a problem on our end or yours? If on our end we would love to know what it was.

      • Katie says:

I was having the same problem with the zucchini and yellow squash. After slicing and chopping, I didn’t get near enough cups from the number of squash the instructions said to use. I had to send the hubby out to get double the amount. Anyone else have this problem? The instructions say “medium” and that’s a relative term…perhaps I ended up using small? Also, I’m finding that I need a lot more basil in the recipes than the grocery list said to buy. Thanks for all your hard work! This is my first time doing this. My hubby loves this as well. In fact, we made chopping night a date night with some wine and had lots of fun after the kids went to bed :)

        • Tricia says:

We will look into the amounts listed here, we are currently looking over this menu anyway. I will say – we go buy our “Sliced & Diced” measurements for medium and yes, at times they can be different depending on what you buy. We try our best to get them right though.

      • karen says:

I had the same problem with the yellow squash & zucchini. I had to run out to buy 2 more yellow squash – i was lucky enough to have plenty of zucchini donated by a co-worker. I also had a problem with chop-list asking for the eggplant to be sliced 1″ thick but the recipe card stated 1/2″. Easy enough to fix. I also had a TON of leftover lime juice.

  14. Heather d says:

Question… I’m new to trying the OAMC thing. We’re all about whole foods here so I’m excited to try some of these recipes. I’m figuring out the instructions… I notice that some things it says “DO NOT freeze this item beforehand”, typically ground beef. This is a problem, because I can only get my ground beef as frozen. I buy meat in bulk from a grass-fed local farm, and they just don’t sell it unfrozen.

I understand that ground beef can’t be thawed and refrozen. In fact, I was curious to see how this was handled in OAMC recipes. I guess I’m just going to have to substitute out those recipes, or make them as a regular meal rather than a frozen-in-advance meal? It’s too bad.

  15. Kacey says:

Thinking of trying OAMC…Can’t remember where I read it on here (something about shopping all month for the ingredients), but is the July menu meant to be made at the beginning or end of the month?

    • kim says:

That really depends on your preference. But some OAMCers like to take the grocery list at the beginning of the month and stock up throughout the month when they see good prices or come across seasonal deals (obviously you’d have to freeze some things like meat). Then they last minute shop for whatever is left and cook at the end of the month. This also works well if it is hard for you to budget for one big shopping trip and need to break it up. Or you can choose to do one big shopping trip and cooking day when your schedule allows.

Okay, I made this menu on monday. It was a full day, each recipe was great! It has been so fun to pull something I can feel good about feeding my family out of the freezer, and voila, dinner is done. THANK YOU! What a gift it is. Also, I can’t do dairy, but most people who can’t do dairy can do goat milk products. I replaced sour cream with goat’s yogurt, and made the alfredo with rice milk and soft goat cheese (instead of cream cheese) it was delicious. rice milk is a great cooking substitute for any milk products as it doesn’t leave a funny aftertaste. The corn soup I also used rice milk in. I would whole-heartedly recommend this!

    • kim says:

Glad you were able to enjoy it with substitutions! You may want to check out our GFDF menus/recipes for more options.

  17. Alisa says:

I just want to say, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for this!

My son was recently diagnosed with a chronic disease that affects his digestive system. As a result, we have been working on completely revamping the way we eat as well as teaching both of my kids how to cook from scratch and make it “do-able” in the real world.

This is such a help for me, to make good healthy meals from scratch and not spend all of my time in the kitchen. Again, THANK YOU!

  18. Amanda says:

OAMM has been such a huge time saver for us. I work several evenings a week and I love knowing that my family is still getting a healthy meal that I prepared even when I’m not around!!! We are adopting a more traditional foods and whole foods diet and I love this menu- our family is also completely gluten free and I’ve had a lot of luck adapting this menu to GF. I am not crazy about the GF/DF menu on here because of all the soy based and pre-made items used on it so I love this one! Thank you!

  19. Julie says:

in the sweet corn chowder, do you add the bacon to the soup or is it a garnish?

  20. Dawn says:

This is a true treasure. My mother suffered a heart attack two weeks ago, my father is ill and morbidly obese & my grandmother suffered a stroke at the begging of the year. I’m a single mother with two teenagers, work a full-time job & now have the duty of cooking for both my parents & grandmother. I’m going to try cooking for the month this weekend. Looking forward to it. Thank you for sharing your amazing organizational skills – it’s a time saver for so many.

One question – when can I expect the August menu to be published?

    Thanks again!

  21. Sally says:

The waffles were wonderful and the ones we froze heated up perfectly in the oven.

  22. Kerry says:

Can you freeze the egg and ham crepes?

    • Tricia says:

You can freeze everything on this menu. For the complete instructions on freezing please see the linked documents below, especially the printable recipe cards.
