WHOLE FOODS November 2011 OAMM Menu (OAMC, Freezer Cooking, Bulk Cooking, Power Cooking)

Gobble Gobble! Can you hear the countdown to Thanksgiving? I can! Growing up we all went around the table before we ate and said something we were thankful for. As I get older I find myself becoming more and more thankful for so much every year. And I want to take this brief minute to thank all of you for helping make this site such a success! You make our jobs fun around here and constantly pushing us to the next level. We cannot wait to show you what we have in store for you coming up this month and next year. Stay tuned, it’s sure to please!

November is the month where most gardens have finally stopped producing our summer favorites but start the harvest for some of the great fall and winter favorites. You will find pumpkin, butternut squash, sweet potatoes, as well as a few hearty beef and vegetarian recipes in this month’s menu. The Tahoe Brunch for example is a wonderful breakfast recipe that you can make the night before and enjoy Thanksgiving morning or the next day. It will definitely get you through to dinner time!

With the Whole Foods menu you will also notice that there are Add-On Recipes. These are recipes tailored for you to create almost everything from this menu in your own kitchen. You are more than welcome to make the choice to purchase items to save time, however I feel you won’t be disappointed with the taste of your hard work, and you will have pride knowing exactly what went into the dishes that you and your family are enjoying. And not to mention, a few extra dollars in your wallet. This menu will take more time to prepare than other menus, so please be sure to read through the instructions and recipe cards before you start.

**Please note there is a Once A Month Mom Holiday eCookbook Blowout Sale on Wednesday, November 2nd starting at 9:30 Eastern Standard Time. Don’t miss out.

I hope you enjoy these meals as much as our early readers/cooks have. If you are new and not sure how to get started, read here. And there are several other helpful links under the Helpful Hints/Resources section below to help you on your cooking journey. Good luck!

**And for those of you that are new, be sure to subscribe so that you will get the updates on a series we are doing this month on “Getting Started“.

Test Cooks

Each month we have some wonderful volunteers who “test” out the menu prior to publication. They do an amazing job of helping to eliminate confusion and mistakes. They may not catch everything but they sure do catch A LOT! Here is a little bit about this month’s test cooks:

  • Tricia Fourman – I may work full-time outside the home, but feeding my family nutritious food that tastes great is my true passion.  I married the man of my dreams 10 years ago and we have 3 wonderful redheaded boys who are 8, 6, and 3.

The link to the recipe cards seems to be taking me to the grocery list. Could you double check this?

    • Tricia says:

Some days I wonder why I even try. I KNOW I spent time fixing this BEFORE the post when live. Where it went in the meantime? Who knows. Thanks for the heads up they should be fixed now.

  2. Marissa says:

i’m new at this and was wondering if i cook the cranberry roast chicken and potatoes before i freeze it?

  3. Leila says:

Mmmm, I love fall flavors. Everything looks delicious – the addition of the pinterest menu is right up my alley.

  4. Sarah Bradley says:

Regarding the Chicken Parmesan recipe… are we supposed to cook the meat all the way through during the “browning” part? It doesn’t sound this way in the recipe, but it seems like it would be unsafe to cook the meat only partially, then freeze it.

Thanks for all you do! Loved the recipes last month and I can’t wait to try this month’s recipes.

    • Tricia says:

You do NOT have to cook it all the way through, and that is actually not recommended. It will cook when it is baking and will likely dry out more if you cook it all the way through first. HOpe that helps.

  5. [...] First up, my black bean burlatta recipe is on the November Once a Month Mom Whole Foods menu! [...]

  6. jennifer says:

the grocery list indicates black beans. I assume you meant dried. However, the recipe that uses the beans doesn’t mention soaking or cooking the beans before using it. Am I supposed to put the dried beans directly into the recipe?

  7. Jennifer says:

Thanks! Last question. For things listed under add ons, are they add ons because you can choose to buy them premade ie tortillas and bread, or does add ons mean something else?

    • Kelly says:

Yes Jennifer they are items that we choose to make from home and not buy pre-made. But it’s up to you. If you choose not to make them you will have to manually go through the grocery list and remove the items on those recipe cards.

  8. Working on chopping and prepping for my cooking day tomorrow. I think the grocery list had me buy WAY TOO much cheddar cheese. My friend and I are cooking together, so we put in a “serving of 8.” The grocery list told me to buy 216 oz of cheddar cheese, but now that I’m going through the recipe cards I can only find where I need 136 oz of cheddar cheese. That’s a big difference so I wanted to see if I was missing something.

    • Kelly says:

Laura – There is no formula error the amount is correct. Although there is a measurement error on the Tahoe Brunch. I will correct it here shortly, but until then for your cooking day just use the extra cheese in the layers of the Tahoe Brunch and on the Burlattas.

  9. Kelly says:

I am new to using your spreadsheets and probably have a dense question… If I have “1″ in the yellow box, that should give me the amount for 1 serving-as in-one person worth? This seems like a WHOLE lotta food on some of these… 1.25lb of chicken and 3 cups of potatoes for one person on the Cranberry Roast chicken, in particular. Am I not “getting it” and 1 is not in fact 1 “serving”?? I apologize if this is a stupid question or not posted in the right place…

    • Kelly says:

Welcome! And yes it’s the correct amount for the recipe. The recipe is formulated to make two meals for one serving, therefore you will be eating the Cranberry Roast Chicken twice throughout the month. Does that help?

      • Kelly says:

YES. DUH, thank you… I was NOT “getting it”… Thank you for clearing that up… even though I am pretty sure it says *that exactly* in the directions, haha… some people just need it spelled out for them lol ;) thanks for your patience!!!

  10. Vicki says:

Wow–I just discovered this website. It is absolutely amazing the time and effort you’ve put into it to help others. I am so excited to begin!!! Thank you so, so much.

  11. Laura says:

PLEASE keep these whole foods recipes coming! It’s so great to find a site that features a whole foods version of freezer friendly meals. Thank you!!

I’m new and SO VERY EXCITED to find your blog/menus! I’ve recently tried to start cooking/feeding my family whole foods however it does take quite a bit of time and cost. I’m SO excited about your menu because it’s not so different from traditional food that requires my family to eat only beans and tofu (lol)It makes it so much more accessible for my family. However, this month seems to have quite a bit of “expensive” meat like the roasts. Is there a way to use less meat?

Also, I’m having a bit of difficulty navigating the blog to find out just exactly how to start this from day one. There is the getting started section with wonderful information but I feel like it will take me hours to puruse it to find the basic “ah! you’re new! here’s the step 1. 2. 3. of how to do this… expect to take this much time to shop, cook, plan…. fresh veggies are handled by…” and such.

I’m excited about this GREAT site! thx!!

    • Kelly says:

Welcome KT! Thanks for coming by and I’m happy you are enjoying the recipes and the Whole Foods Menu! I will say that this month the recipes may seem expensive but they really to balance themselves out. The chuck roast and the bottom round roast for the beef sandwiches and the bourguignon are actually some of the cheapest cuts of beef you can buy. I would just ask your butcher what days they have meats on sale and stock up then. I know in our butcher it’s typically a Wednesday. But you can eliminate those meals entirely and still have a full menu. Those are only two recipes. The others are vegetarian or use chicken.

As for the getting started, I would suggest that you look at the series and peruse the post titles for the answers you are looking to get the most. With three days left in the series I’m sure we’ve covered every base! Here’s a post Tricia did awhile back on making the best day.
